INDIANAPOLIS — Jim Irsay, the longtime owner and CEO of the Indianapolis Colts who helped shape one of the most successful eras in franchise history, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday. He was 65.

The Colts confirmed the news in a heartfelt statement released by chief operating officer Pete Ward:

“We are devastated to announce our beloved Owner & CEO, Jim Irsay, passed away peacefully in his sleep this afternoon. Jim’s dedication and passion for the Indianapolis Colts, his unwavering generosity, and his love for both his family and community were unmatched.”

Irsay had led the Colts since 1997, inheriting the reins from his father, Robert Irsay. Under his leadership, the team saw its golden age — including a Super Bowl XLI victory, multiple playoff appearances, and the rise of quarterback legend Peyton Manning.

He is survived by his daughters Carlie Irsay-Gordon, Casey Foyt, and Kalen Jackson; his ex-wife Meg Coyle, and ten grandchildren. Carlie Irsay-Gordon, his eldest daughter, is widely seen as the family’s next-generation leader in team operations. She notably stepped in for her father during his 2014 NFL suspension following a DWI arrest.

December 2023 when he was found unresponsive in his home. Police later described the incident as a suspected overdose, and the Colts confirmed he was battling a “severe respiratory illness.” Since then, his public appearances had become increasingly rare. He missed several major NFL events, including the 2024 draft and recent league meetings.

Just hours before his death, Irsay posted on social media cheering on the Indiana Pacers in the NBA Eastern Conference Finals — a final glimpse into his ever-present support for Indianapolis sports and community pride.
