How to understand a company in minutes?

One of my methods for quickly understanding a company, especially before an interview, is the Business Model Canvas (BMC).

What is it?

It’s a tool that enables you to analyze the key elements of a company in one single page. The purpose is to describe briefly how a company creates, delivers and captures value.

Alexander Osterwalder created this tool in 2004 and shipped it to the world through the Business Model Generation book with Yves Pigneur.

For example: What does the Business Model Canvas look like for Netflix?

Try prompting “Business Model Canvas of Netflix” in your favorite AI model and you will obtain a map like this:

  1. Value Proposition (What they offer)
  • On-demand, buffer-free movies and TV shows 24/7.
  • Massive, exclusive hits you can’t watch anywhere else (Netflix Originals).
  • A recommendation engine that feels like it reads your mind.
  1. Customer Segments (Who they serve)
  • Movie and TV lovers worldwide (mass market).
  • “Cord-cutters” looking to ditch traditional cable TV.
  • Global audiences want high-quality shows in their own local language.
  1. Channels (How they reach you)
  • The official Netflix app and website.
  • Pre-installed integrations on your Smart TV, phone, or gaming console.
  1. Customer Relationships (How they keep you)
  • 100% automated self-service (join, upgrade, or cancel in two clicks).
  • Personalized profiles so your family’s viewing habits don’t mess up your feed.
  1. Revenue Streams (How they make money)
  • Tiered monthly subscriptions (Standard, Premium).
  • A newer, cheaper subscription tier supported by video ads.
  1. Key Activities (What they do every day)
  • Producing original movies and buying the rights to popular shows.
  • Improving their tech stack and recommendation algorithms.
  1. Key Resources (What they own)
  • A massive, proprietary library of digital content.
  • Millions of data points on what people like to watch.
  • A globally trusted brand.
  1. Key Partners (Who helps them)
  • Filmmakers, writers, and animation studios.
  • Tech giants (Apple, Samsung, Sony) that pre-install the app on devices.
  • Cloud infrastructure (AWS) to keep video streaming smooth.
  1. Cost Structure (Where the money goes)
  • Billions spent upfront on producing and buying content.
  • Global marketing to win and retain subscribers.
  • Keeping the servers running and the tech up to date.

As a Product Builder, understanding this information is crucial for driving outcomes and product scalability.
