Loneliness is always viewed through the prism of companionship offered by social connections.
Nobody talks about the quality of the relationships. Social connections will cure loneliness only if they nourish, elevate, inspire, and soothe us.
It is not the number of social connections that matter; it is the quality of relationships that provides genuine companionship.
The wrong kind of friendships and frivolous social relationships can even make us miserable.
I avoid loneliness because I am comfortable in my own company. My solitude nourishes my thoughts.
Humanity is my proxy social companion. I contemplate philosophical questions that are timeless. I reach out to the past peoples and the present society.
My social companions exist in my mind; they are nameless, yet real representatives of humanity.
“All of humanity’s problems stem from man’s inability to sit quietly in a room alone.” — Blaise Pascal
My personal space is not empty; it’s full of figurative companions who lived in the past, who are living in the present, and who are yet to be born. Contemplating existential questions transcends space and time.
Reflection in solitude is more intellectually nourishing, emotionally calming, and spiritually uplifting than following the news cycle or spending time in the company of people I can’t relate to in any way.
“Blessed are those who do not fear solitude, who are not afraid of their own company, who are not always desperately looking for something to do, something to amuse themselves with, something to judge.” — **Paulo Coelho**
A rich inner life helps me to explore a wide range of topics. Exploring the unknown with curiosity, reading great thoughts from great minds, and writing and sharing what I learn keep me intellectually engaged and emotionally satisfied.
This is not an exercise in virtue-signalling. This is not an argument against the value of good social connections.
I just make the point that authentic solitude is one of the effective ways people can fight loneliness. Don’t feel guilty if you like your own company. People may call you names like “loner” or social recluse” because they don’t understand the value of intellectually enhancing and soul-nourishing solitude.
To each, their own path to companionship.
