In Hindu cosmology, there’s a concept that’s going to blow your mind: the gunas.
According to this vision of reality, the cosmic order is sustained through the interaction of three primordial tendencies or qualities called the gunas.
1. Guna Sattva
It comes from the Sanskrit root sat, meaning “being,” “truth,” or “reality.” It is the highest and most luminous guna. It is associated with purity, joy, harmony, mental clarity, unity, and order. It represents the upward impulse toward goodness, consciousness, and the spiritual.
2. Guna Tamas
It is the opposite of Sattva. It relates to darkness, inertia, passivity, laziness, ignorance, apathy, and everything that pulls us downward. It is strongly linked to material attachment — when “having” turns into possessiveness and you end up possessed by your possessions (like Gollum with the Ring in The Lord of the Rings :-)
3. Guna Rajas
It sits between the previous two. It represents passion, activity, dynamism, restlessness, ambition, and — in excess — violence and excessiveness. It is tied to the drive to “do,” to want to take on everything and multiply actions.
These three gunas are present in everything that exists, in greater or lesser proportion.
Even in food:
- Predominantly sattvic: vegetables, greens, fresh fruits, legumes, whole grains, fresh milk, nuts, etc. They promote clarity and calm.
- Predominantly tamasic: ultra-processed foods, excessive meat, stale or reheated food, heavy fried items, pizza, hamburgers, instant noodles, etc. They generate heaviness and inertia.
- Predominantly rajasic: coffee, tea, chocolate, strong spices, refined sugar, stimulants, etc. They generate agitation and nervous energy.
That’s why the main difference between people with “high vibration” and “low vibration” lies in which gunas they predominantly connect with.
Boom!
Conclusion
- Those who surround themselves with sattvic elements (food, environments, relationships, jobs, places, habits) tend to have luminous, pure, and powerful energy — a high vibration.
- Those who surround themselves with tamasic elements tend toward laziness, confusion, and stagnation. They carry a dark, dense, and weakening energy — a low vibration.
You might think that filling yourself with Rajas (frantic action, multitasking, hyper-productivity) is the solution.
But it’s a subtle trap:
Excess Rajas scatters your energy in a thousand directions and, over time, usually leads to Tamas (burnout, exhaustion, and existential emptiness).
The Spanish saying captures it perfectly: “Grasp all, lose all” (Quien mucho abarca, poco aprieta).
As Hindu tradition teaches, true balance and spiritual evolution are achieved by cultivating Sattva and ultimately transcending the three gunas.
How to Cultivate Sattva to Raise Your Vibration
Obviously, by surrounding yourself with situations, people, foods, environments, activities, and habits that are predominantly sattvic — those that support a calm, reflective, peaceful, harmonious life full of mental clarity, order, and structure.
(And especially by avoiding tamasic ones and not becoming addicted to rajasic ones.)
But there’s also a powerful shortcut I want to share with you.
To help you remember it, here’s a beautiful parallel from Catholic tradition.
During Mass, right before the Gospel is read, the faithful make three small crosses with their thumb:
- One on the forehead,
- One on the lips,
- And one on the chest (over the heart).
Many people think it’s just a routine gesture during prayer or the creed, but it has a profound symbolic meaning:
- The cross on the forehead: to purify and open the mind to good thoughts.
- The cross on the lips: to purify our words and speech.
- The cross on the chest: to purify our actions and the intentions of the heart.
So if you focus on removing all heavy, mean, or negative thoughts; if you stop speaking badly about others, criticizing, or judging unnecessarily; and if, at the same time, you strive to do good works — you’ll enter a virtuous sattvic cycle.
The energy you used to waste on low things now gets invested in cultivating elevated thoughts, constructive words, and noble actions.
The result? You won’t just raise your “vibration” and mental clarity — you’ll become a high-quality human being: someone worth knowing and having around.
Boom!
