Indonesia’s Growing Economic Anxiety

By Kartika Ekawati

Over the past two years, many Indonesians have felt increasing economic pressure. Rising taxes, higher fuel prices, and the growing cost of living have made daily life more challenging for millions of families. At the same time, public demonstrations in several cities reflect growing concerns about the country’s economic direction.

While policymakers often discuss these issues through economic data and fiscal strategies, ordinary people experience them through shrinking household budgets and financial uncertainty.

However, the impact is not only economic — it is psychological.

When living costs continue to rise while incomes remain relatively stagnant, many people experience stress, anxiety, and emotional exhaustion. Parents worry about their children’s future, workers fear job insecurity, and young adults question whether they can achieve the life goals they once imagined.

This growing sense of uncertainty can lead to frustration, declining optimism, and reduced trust in public institutions. Demonstrations, therefore, are not simply political events; they are often expressions of deeper social and economic anxieties.

The challenge for any government is not only managing economic indicators but also maintaining public confidence. People are more willing to accept difficult policies when they believe those sacrifices will lead to a better future.

Today, many Indonesians are not just struggling with rising costs. They are struggling with uncertainty.

And when uncertainty becomes a permanent part of daily life, the greatest risk is not only economic hardship — it is the gradual loss of hope.

Because a strong nation needs more than economic growth. It needs citizens who still believe that tomorrow will be better than today.
