The Quietest Person in the Room Taught Me a Leadership Lesson

One moment during the Amal Fellowship has stayed with me ever since. It was not during a lecture or a workshop. It happened after a simple group activity. As we were discussing the activity, my teammates and I pointed out to one of our fellows that he had barely participated. We told him that he had not spoken much or shared many ideas. At that time, I genuinely thought we were just being honest and helping him improve. I did not realize that instead of encouraging him, we were making him feel judged.

After the photo session, I could not stop thinking about our conversation. Something did not feel right. I walked up to him and told him that I felt we had been too critical and that he might have felt bad because of it. He smiled and started telling me about himself. He said he had always been a quiet person. In fact, one of his teachers used to call him "Khamosh Panchi" because he rarely spoke. As we talked, I realized that we had assumed his silence meant he was not interested or was not contributing, when in reality, it was simply his personality.

That conversation completely changed my perspective. I used to believe that if everyone was given the same opportunity to speak, then everyone was included. I now understand that inclusion is much deeper than that. Some people need more time to organize their thoughts, while others need encouragement before they feel comfortable sharing their ideas. His honesty helped me realize that treating everyone the same does not always mean everyone feels equally included.

This experience also changed the way I think about leadership. A good leader does not only pay attention to those who speak confidently. They notice the quieter members, understand their personalities, encourage them to participate, and create a safe environment where everyone feels heard. Leadership is not just about completing a task. It is about bringing every member of the team along in a way that respects their individual differences.

Looking back, I am grateful for that conversation because it challenged my assumptions and taught me a lesson I will carry with me. It reminded me that leadership begins with empathy, patience, and listening before judging. Sometimes, the quietest person in the room can teach us the loudest lesson, and I hope to become the kind of leader who makes every voice feel valued.
