Emma and Emily Mays’s debut comedy.

Not long ago, I received a letter from debut authors requesting a book proposal, but since my list of authors is full, I couldn’t submit a proposal at the moment and decided to check out their work.

So, the authors, Emma and Emily Mays, have published a book trilogy that tells a rather humorous story about the quest for easy money.

“Who Beats Who” is the title of the books. There are three books in the series, each telling a standalone story with a common stumbling block: easy money.

The authors decided to rely on awkward humor and the characters making fun of each other, and this model worked; it maintains momentum throughout the narrative.

The heroines are four women: Piper, the main loser, is at the heart of the books and the driving force behind the plot. She works as an editor, but misfortune follows her everywhere, so at one turning point, the loser decides to take a reckless step and sets off on a treasure hunt. She’s not alone, however. Conniving and predatory rivals are hot on her heels, ready to snatch the money. The team of Betty, Cindy, and Rachel brings the story to life, with plenty of funny moments where they’re incredibly stupid and do downright stupid things that no sane person would do. But we can laugh or twirl our fingers at our temples.

The authors write in simple language; the book is filled primarily with dialogue, the text is not overloaded with descriptions, which is quite natural for a comedy. There’s more conversation. It’s like a sitcom on paper. The book doesn’t aspire to be high-fiction. I’d say it’s mass-market, and quite successful with the right strategy.

I’d also like to express my wish and advice to the authors that the book is worthy of being a full-fledged screenplay. It’s a great comedy for wide release and weekends. I’d advise the authors to consider finding a Hollywood screenwriting agent. What do you think?
