Her duty was to listen for rooms that had lost their purpose. She carried a brass key, a linen notebook, and a small bottle of rainwater collected from the institute roof. When a corridor felt too heavy with silence, Jane touched the wall with one wet finger and wrote down the first sound that arrived: a chair turning, a kettle breathing, a child practicing a song without confidence.

No one else believed the corridors were alive. The directors called them architectural errors, leftovers from renovations. But Jane knew better. At twilight, the walls softened, and doors appeared where there had been only shadow. Through one door she once saw a banquet table set for absent guests. Through another, an old woman folding letters she had never sent. Jane did not enter. She only bowed, recorded the temperature of the memory, and closed the door gently.
