As educators, we share a universal frustration: we are swimming in student data but starved for actionable insights.
At the end of every week, our organisation’s Learning Management Systems (LMS) dutifully spit out massive CSV files filled with raw assessment scores, attendance percentages, and ID numbers. But raw data doesn’t tell a story. It doesn’t tell you which student is silently slipping behind, or whether a drop in week-two attendance is mathematically predicting a failure in week-five.
The EdTech Gap: Why Build “Gradylitics”
If you look at the current Educational Technology (EdTech) landscape, there is a glaring missing link.
On one end of the spectrum, we have the LMS (like Moodle, Canvas, or Blackboard). These systems are excellent at storing data, but notoriously terrible at synthesizing it for quick, pedagogical action. On the other end of the spectrum, institutions invest in massive Enterprise Business Intelligence tools (like Tableau or PowerBI). While powerful, these require steep learning curves, dedicated data teams, and complex API integrations. If a lecturer just wants to know who failed Assessment 1 and also missed two classes, they often have to submit an IT ticket or spend two hours wrestling with Excel VLOOKUPs and pivot tables.
The gap was clear: Educators need a lightweight, zero-setup bridge between raw LMS exports and actionable classroom insights. We need a tool that acts like an enterprise dashboard but operates with the simplicity of a web app.
I decided it was time to build that bridge to streamline my own workflow as a lecturer. Enter Gradylitics AI. I build it for me and my own productivity but later understood that its not just my problem, a lot of other peers could use this for their own workflow too.
What is Gradylitics?
Currently in its BETA phase, Gradylitics (Grade Analytics) is a web-based, 100% private, local-processing educational analytics platform designed specifically for the workflows of modern academics. It is a schema-agnostic platform that turns raw XLSX, ODT and CSV into interactive pedagogical roadmaps.

Phase 1: The Home Page & The Mapping Wizard
The experience begins on the Gradylitics Home Page, designed to be an intuitive, frictionless launchpad. Because data privacy is the absolute highest priority in education, the platform is built as a Single Page Application (SPA). This means 100% of the data processing happens locally within your browser. No student data is ever sent to an external server or cloud provider, ensuring strict compliance with educational data protection standards.
- The Multi-File Dropzone: You can drag and drop a single block’s Moodle export, or upload multiple files at once (e.g., Block 5, 6, and 7) for longitudinal tracking.
- The Dynamic Mapping Wizard: LMS exports are notoriously messy, and column names change constantly. Instead of breaking when it sees an unfamiliar header, Gradylitics intercepts the upload and presents a sleek UI wizard. It auto-guesses your columns (matching “Attendance (Real)” to “Attendance”, for example), allowing you to confirm or remap variables in seconds before the analytical engine takes over.
Phase 2: The Dashboard (The Command Center)
Once the data is processed, you are taken to the main Dashboard — a unified command center that moves your workflow from descriptive (what happened) to predictive (what will happen).
- The High-Level Overview: The top of the dashboard provides instant, high-contrast KPI cards: Total Students, Average Course Total, Average Attendance, and a direct count of At-Risk students. Alongside this is an interactive Plotly-powered Performance Distribution chart mapping your exact Pass, Credit, Distinction, and High Distinction spreads.
- Smart Categorization Tabs: No more filtering spreadsheets. The dashboard splits your cohort into intelligent tabs:
- At-Risk & Early Intervention: Automatically flags students whose attendance or early assessment scores dip below critical thresholds.
- Top Performers: Instantly identifies your Distinction and High Distinction students for positive reinforcement.
- The Correlation Explorer: Curious if your “Assessment 1” scores are actually a good predictor of final course success? The built-in correlation matrix allows you to map relationships (e.g., attendance vs. final grades) to mathematically validate your teaching strategies.
Under the Hood: The AI & Proprietary Tech Stack
What makes Gradylitics truly unique is how it handles complex predictive analytics without ever compromising student privacy.
Rather than relying on third-party cloud APIs, Gradylitics utilizes an edge-computed predictive heuristic model. At its core, the platform doesn’t just read rows and columns; it maps multi-variable relationships in real-time.
We developed a proprietary data-structuring algorithm that cleanses, normalizes, and merges chaotic LMS datasets on the fly. Once structured, the local AI engine applies a weighted predictive risk-scoring model. It doesn’t just filter for students who have failed an assessment; it identifies the behavioral signatures of failing students — correlating early attendance drops with initial assessment velocities to forecast end-of-block performance.
By utilizing advanced JavaScript (ES6+) array buffering and in-memory matrix math, the system calculates Pearson correlation coefficients and dynamically generates insights directly in the client’s browser. It delivers enterprise-grade machine learning insights with zero data transmission risk.

Automating the Administrative Burden
Data is only useful if you can act on it. Gradylitics features an integrated Email Outreach System. With one click from the dashboard, you can trigger targeted, BCC-protected emails to your “At-Risk” cohort offering support, or send congratulatory messages to your “Top Performers.”
Furthermore, end-of-block reporting is simplified with one-click enterprise exports. Need to brief the faculty? Export the Lecturer’s Action Report, which isolates students needing immediate academic support. Need to report to administration? Generate the Dean’s Report, a beautifully formatted, multi-tab Excel workbook detailing overall cohort health.
What’s Next?
Data should empower educators, not exhaust them. It’s time to stop formatting spreadsheets and start focusing on student success.
Gradylitics is currently undergoing beta testing within active teaching in my blocks at the Australian Institute of Higher Education (AIHE). By utilizing it in a real-world, day-to-day coordination environment, the feedback is directly shaping the platform to solve actual classroom bottlenecks.
Once the beta phase is complete and the final version is released, Gradylitics will be made available as a universal tool for educators everywhere, fully compatible with any Moodle-based LMS export.
