Syafiq Wirawan: The Silent Signal: What the Fed’s March Move Means for a Closed Market

As I write this from the quiet of Nyepi, the contrast between our local silence and the global volatility is striking. While our exchange is paused, the Federal Reserve yesterday decided to hold the line at 3.5%–3.75%. For many, the “pause” was expected, but the message hidden in the “Dot Plot” was the real signal.

The 2026 Inflation Reality Looking at the latest Economic Projections, there is a clear shift in tone. The Fed has revised its 2026 PCE inflation forecast upward to 2.7%. This “sticky inflation” narrative is supported by a Dot Plot that now only hints at a single 25bp cut for the entirety of 2026. For those of us managing portfolios in emerging markets, this “Higher for Longer” stance is a critical factor for the rest of the year.

Proxy Price Discovery With our local market offline, we must look at NYC for price discovery. The data is telling a story of caution. The MSCI Indonesia ETF (EIDO) fell to ~$15.57, and Telkom (TLK) dropped to ~$18.25. This suggests that international investors are repositioning ahead of the long holiday, likely fearing that the Rupiah will face continued pressure near the 17,000 psychological barrier.

The Liquidity Gap We are also seeing a classic “sell the news” reaction in Bitcoin, which corrected to $70,886. Gold, surprisingly, didn’t catch a bid, sliding to $4,871. My personal view is that we are entering a “Holiday Vacuum” — a period of thin liquidity where moves are exaggerated.

In these moments, my philosophy is to value clarity over action. The silence of Nyepi is a gift. It allows us to process the fact that the Fed is not yet ready to pivot. As we move toward the Idul Fitri holidays, my focus remains on capital preservation and monitoring that 17,000 line on the Rupiah.
