Christianity Calls: 3 Ways To Recognize God’s Call & What Comes Next In Your Hero’s Journey, Whether It’s Kingship Or Kinship

When I look at the world around me, it’s not that God isn’t active — there’s signs of his work in every tree, every child, and every sunrise…

But he’s not exactly handing down commandments, summoning plagues of locusts, or any of those cool stories he’s credited with in the Bible.

The question I’m trying to get at isn’t, “Where is God?” but rather, “How will we know his call when we hear it?”

You see, I’m a little concerned that, living in modern times when things are rarely as clear as back in ancient history, what if God calls for us to take up the mantle, to begin our hero’s journey… and we don’t hear the phone?

I know, I know, he’s not likely to be calling up our smartphones and making a request, or leaving a message — that was a just a bit of a metaphor.

While God does speak to us, I believe, it’s pretty rare for it to be so openly as a voice coming from the heavens, or from your smartphone.

Typically, the challenges we have set by God don’t come with an invitation, a burning bush, or any other indicator that they came from above. That’s the part we need to recognize on our own.

That’s the big question I really want to talk about today: how can we recognize those challenges without a big voice booming them from the sky?

What does God’s call sound like in a modern era, and how can we answer it?

When the gates to heaven open, I want to be standing front and center waiting to get in, and that means doing my best to advance his works here on Earth. So let’s talk a little about how we know what that means, and what we can do to take part.

Here’s the 3-step plan I’ve been following, and maybe it can help you out as well.

1. Don’t Wait For A Gilded Invitation

I know that in the Bible everything is much clearer, but honestly, I don’t think it was that way for everyone, even back then.

I doubt every single person had God appearing to them and telling them what to do. While it may have been more common back then, most folks still had to wing it.

My recommendation is not to become Ebenezer Scrooge, waiting for 3 ghosts to tell you it’s time to do good deeds — just go out and do them.

God speaks to us, about us, and around us all the time every single day.

You don’t need a golden invitation in the mail to be able to listen up, or a direct line giving instructions.

There are good works to be done all around us, every day, in every way.

2. Learn More, Live More

I have a theory, and it’s been shown to be true so far, that the more you know about God and his works, the more you see them in the world around us.

This also holds true for any hobbies or skills you have in this life, so let me give you an example.

Let’s say that you’re a fan of fancy cars — that means that when you see cars driving around, they’re more than just a means of transport.

Each one has a story, every model means something new, and when you see a cool fancy car, it can give you a feeling of awe and make you think of whatever bit about that specific car is interesting, that others likely don’t even know.

Well, the same goes for God, except his works are everywhere.

The more you learn about the Bible and how it applies to modern, everyday life, the more you’ll see God and his works in the world around us, and the more opportunities you’ll see to make them even better.

3. Your Journey, Your Way

One thing that I hear a lot is that life today can be quite boring, and whenever I hear that, I feel like we must not be trying hard enough.

Our journey through this life isn’t just something we have to do to get into heaven and enjoy eternity, it’s an important, integral, and exciting part of the story.

Let me put it to you this way: if you read a book where the character was always moping about how boring their life was, it would be boring.

Take the same character, same life, but give them an endless sense of curiosity, passion, and good will, and suddenly it’s a page-turner.

Your journey can be as exciting, or as boring, as you make it… but you have the power to change it, and you should know that.

The thing to remember is that we each have our own journey to face on this Earth, but those journeys are all intertwined.

You don’t need to be called to be King to make a lasting and positive impression on the world, and you don’t need to face down a Goliath to make a difference.

We all have our own journeys, our own challenges, and sometimes that hardest step is just recognizing what they are.
