How People Celebrate Magh Bihu

Families, friends, and neighbours gather for a grand feast on Uruka night. The next morning, people light the Meji, throw offerings into the fire, and seek blessings. People dance and sing traditional Bihu songs around the bonfire with warm hearts and happiness. There are many amazing games played in villages which mesmerise people every time. buffalo fights, cock fights, tekeli bhonga (pot-breaking), and kite flying add to the festive spirit. Visiting relatives, exchanging sweets, and spreading joy is an essential part of the festival.

This festival is very close to my heart because my family celebrates together when all my cousins come to my home for the Magh Bihu celebration every year.

It’s like when January passed by we again waited for the next Magh Bihu.

We all cousins play, eat, laugh, sit, and sing around the bonfire, visit our relative’s houses and return home late at night. it’s a moment of joy happiness and laughter. But now since all my cousins are in hotels, and some got married we miss those moments we spent together during our childhood

Magh Bihu is not just a festival; it is a celebration of gratitude, togetherness, and Assamese cultural heritage. It is the joy of a successful harvest, the warmth of family bonds, and the spirit of community feasting. Meji bonfire to traditional delicacies and lively festivities every moment of Magh Bihu reflects the deep-rooted traditions of Assam. As time passes life takes loved ones on different paths and the nostalgia of childhood celebrations remains a cherished memory. Yet, the essence of Magh Bihu is unity, joy, and the love shared over food and festivities — continues to bring people together, making it a timeless and heartwarming tradition.
