Where the Ordinary Begins to Glow
learning to notice what was always there
The first time I heard it, it did not sound like a warning․
“The world is full of undying weird things,” the old man said‚ smiling and watering the little plants by his gate․ Not strange in a frightening way‚ strange in the way sunsets are‚ in the way people stay kind even after being hurt․
I didn’t understand him then․ I just nodded and walked past‚ carrying my usual thoughts‚ what I lacked‚ what I needed‚ who I was trying to become․
It was only with the slowing of everything that his words came back to me.
There was no big moment. No sudden change. Just small things.
The way the light stayed a little longer on my window. The way laughter sounded softer when I wasn’t forcing it. The way silence didn’t feel empty anymore.
It was quiet. Almost easy to miss.
But something in me began to shift.
I started noticing things I used to overlook, how strangers hold doors open without thinking, how trees keep growing without asking if they’re enough, how even broken things still carry beauty in their shape.
And one day, without planning to, I sat down and wrote:
maybe the world was never heavy, maybe I just learned to carry it that way.
maybe there are quiet miracles happening in ordinary hours, and I was just too loud inside to hear them.
I went back to the old man after that.
“I think I get it now‚” I told him․
He didn’t ask what I meant․ He just nodded‚ like he already knew․
“The world is full of undying weird things‚” he repeated‚ softer this time․ “Not everything needs to be understood․ Some things are meant to be felt․”
I stayed there for a while watching him take care of his plants․
Nothing extraordinary happened. No answers appeared. No life changing revelation struck me all at once.
But I left feeling lighter.
And as I walked away, I realized something that felt like a quiet truth settling into place,
maybe enlightenment isn’t about finding something new‚ maybe it’s about finally seeing what’s been there all along.
