Lighten Up, Babe

Look at that squishy face! I mean, check out those bottom choppers!

I reread my last three posts (well, my only three posts because I’m new here) and thought, “Egad, lighten up and kiss a dog.”

Here, Gladys shows off her late-Fall chapeau. Notice how the orange brings out the gold of her eyes. Kissable features: cheeks, neck, and forehead. Soft to the touch and probably feels fabulous curled up in the lap.

My own dog — a 15-year-old, Texas rescue (smooth Doxie) who was cast aside after she couldn’t bear pups anymore— is currently burrowed underneath her favorite blanket, just her little butt and tail sticking out.

Her name is Cassie (AKA Cassie LaRue, Cassandra Louise, Casserole), and she is the first face I see in the morning and the last one at night. She is my anchor to everything that matters in this world. She wraps her little body around my chest and neck when it’s time for hugs (the Cassie-Flop), to calm me when I’m uptight (the Sidle-Up), or to sass me with her sweet guttural noises (isn’t it time for food, a treat, or SOMETHING?)

She’s very independent, but when she wants attention, I have no choice but to stop what I’m doing and wheel my desk chair to her. She seems to know when I’ve been concentrating too long in front of the computer screen. She is a welcome respite. And when I get a little heated with the timing of her interruptions, I realize that she is, indeed, the time keeper here. And I love her for it.
