A Surprise Encounter With A Georgia River Dangle
An Ordinary Walk Turns Into A Very Specific Sighting

No one’s going to believe you, I thought to myself.
Nobody in their right mind is going to believe you just happened to see an animal this rare.
But it must be my lucky summer because yesterday afternoon, I spotted one of my state’s most elusive creatures — the Danglus georgiensus, or Georgia River Dangle.
Few people have ever seen one in the wild. They’re shy animals, so sightings are rare. Plus once you tell anyone you’ve seen one, they stop returning your texts.
Unlike the Alabama Pine Scoot, the Georgia River Dangle thrives in water. On land, it’ll stand perfectly still for hours, hoping you’ll mistake it for someone’s dog or just a regular River Dangle.
Typically, the species has an odd, block-shaped head, small ears, and a body covered in light brown hair. They’re intelligent, and capable of recognizing human faces.
The one I saw looked majestic. It was muscular with stocky legs and a thick, barrel-like chest. It seemed confident, the kind of quiet authority you only see in apex predators.

I should’ve thrown some bread crumbs or something to entice it to come closer, but since I haven’t had a rabies shot recently, I decided it was best to keep my distance.
I watched it sniff the air and chase some little fish in the shallow water. There was a close call when I stepped on a twig that snapped loudly, almost giving away my position. Luckily, the Dangle was too busy chasing a bumble bee to notice.
After watching it for several long moments, this one silently slipped back into the forest before I could gather more evidence. I’ve included the only two photos I managed to get before the creature vanished.

Judge for yourself, but I know what I saw. Whether science is ready for the Georgia River Dangle is another matter entirely.
