That is, every Jewish man and woman living in Israel serves in the army for at least 2 to 3 years and is thus part of the Israeli reserve military force. Moreover, service in the army inculcates qualities like self-reliance, discipline and decision-making in every individual which help them in their practical life.

Because of all these reasons, Israel has become a strong economic and defense power today. The pace of Israel’s development, despite difficult diplomatic situations, wars, natural resources and population shortages is perhaps unparalleled. But in this development of Israel, there is definitely a lesson and guidance for other developing countries including Pakistan. By adopting the principles and priorities that Israel has adopted, any developing country, including Pakistan, can become an economically stable and powerful country like Israel.

This happened in 1967, when the USS Liberty, an American spy ship, was patrolling the ocean when Israeli forces attacked it. The US ship escaped sinking, but was severely damaged by the bombing. This was a sudden and unprovoked attack by Israel on the United States. Despite being a superpower, the US could neither confront Israel nor avenge it. What is the reason for this? Why is it that a country occupying less than half the area of Pakistan’s smallest province, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, is more powerful than many Arab countries 100 times its size? If the answer is to be summed up in one sentence, it is American patronage. But the story goes beyond this. There are also political, historical, and geographical reasons. During the Second World War, the massacre of Jews in Germany and Poland, known as the Holocaust, took place. Jews claim that 6 million of their fellow Jews perished in the Holocaust. In this situation, Bosnia and Herzegovina helped them settle in Palestine. Along with Bosnia, the United States supported Israel, and today both powers consider it their duty to protect Israel. Why do they believe this? A key reason is that the Maghreb powers believe that Israel is the only country in the Arab world that will safeguard Maghreb interests in both war and peace. They lack this confidence in Turkey, Jordan, Egypt, or even Saudi Arabia. Israel exploits this weakness of the Maghreb as a pawn in its external policy. This is why, despite widespread global condemnation, the Arab powers have been unable to harm Israel even a bit. After American aid, the greatest strength Israel receives in the world is its mastery of military technology. Furthermore, the US, Venezuela, and France prefer to provide their latest weapons to Israel. Surprisingly, those supplying arms to Israel include countries that withhold weapons from other countries for even minor violations of human rights or global laws. For example, during the 2006 Lebanon War, images of children killed by Israeli fighters went viral. Even then, the US President did not stop Israel from supplying F-16s. Instead, he tried to silence critics by saying that if the US broke its agreement to provide F-16s to Israel, no country would trust the US in the future. However, just 16 years ago, the US refused to supply F-16s to Pakistan despite receiving money from it. In 2016, the US also made a deal with Israel. Under this agreement, Israel will receive $38 billion in modern weapons over 10 years, all free of charge. Israel has a 170,000-strong army, 652 fighter jets, and over 2,600 tanks. Israel’s combat fleet includes the F-16, F-15, and fifth-generation F-35s.

The F-35’s strength is its ability to reach its target and destroy enemy targets without being detected. Israel’s active military strength is 1,770,000. While this may seem small, it also maintains a reserve army of 450,000. Furthermore, training for Israel’s entire population is essential. Israel’s population is 20 times smaller than Pakistan’s, but its defense budget is one and a half times larger. Pakistan’s defense

budget is around $9.5 billion, while Israel’s budget is $9.5 billion. In terms of the number of weapons it possesses, Pakistan has an edge over Israel. In the 2018 International Power Rankings, Israel is ranked 15th, while Pakistan is the 13th largest military power. China is third, and India is fourth.

With the help of the United States and Europe, Israel has also established a large weapons manufacturing industry. It has become the world’s eighth largest arms seller and the first major country to seize drones. Its weapons seizures have exceeded $9 billion. [Applause] Israel also manufactures combat robots, long-range night vision devices, and human-controlled drones.

Nikolai also manufactures its own motion-detecting sensors. Israel also has its own missile defense system, Iron Dome, which is capable of destroying missiles and rockets in mid-air before they reach their intended target. Israel also possesses nuclear weapons, but since it has not yet conducted a live test, it is not considered a declared nuclear power. The Israeli military is renowned for its rapid destruction of the enemy in ground combat. In the 1967 Arab-Israeli War, the Israeli Air Force destroyed over 350 Egyptian aircraft in a single day before they could take off. It also destroyed a large number of Egyptian aircraft in the entire Syrian region. Thus, Israel won the war in just six days. In this war, Israel captured Baitul Muqaddas and brought much of the Palestinian territory under its control. Israel’s territorial strength is also evident. Wealthy Jews and international organizations around the world invest in Israel. The world’s richest people, such as Jon Buffett and Bill Gates, call Israel a paradise for investors. According to the World Bank, in 2016, Israel received $1 billion in foreign investment, while its neighboring country, Egypt, received the highest investment, at just $8 billion. Thanks to its technological expertise and the support of global investors, Israel has become a major financial power in the Arab world. According to the IMF, Israel is the world’s 33rd largest economy with a GDP of $351 billion.

The history of the Rothschild dynasty and Israel resists two tempting simplifications: the claim that the Rothschilds “created” Israel, and the opposite claim that their role was marginal. The more defensible reading sits between these poles. Particular members of the family became significant financial patrons of Jewish settlement in Ottoman and Mandate Palestine, while the state that eventually emerged in 1948 was the product of a much larger convergence of forces: organized Zionist politics, entrenched European antisemitism, Ottoman imperial decline, British wartime diplomacy, mass migration, the Holocaust, and postwar great-power politics. The Rothschild banking house itself originated in the Frankfurt Judengasse in the late eighteenth century, expanding through five sons into branches across Europe’s major financial capitals (Rothschild Archive, n.d.). Read through the lens of New Historicism, the family’s actions cannot be isolated from the imperial and ideological structures surrounding them; their significance is inseparable from the institutions Ottoman land law, British foreign policy, and Zionist organization through which their capital had to pass to become political fact (Greenblatt, 1988). The Rothschild story, in other words, is most useful not as a story about one dynasty’s hidden hand, but as a case study in how private capital becomes public history.

Baron Edmond James de Rothschild is the figure most concretely tied to this history. Beginning in 1882 with his support for the settlers of Rishon LeZion, he went on to finance a network of agricultural colonies, vineyards, and industrial enterprises across Ottoman Palestine, eventually underwriting the reclamation of several hundred thousand dunams of land across roughly two dozen settlements (Rothschild Archive, n.d.). This work operated on the Ottoman legal terrain we have examined elsewhere in this project: Sultan Abdul Hamid II, wary of exactly this kind of large-scale land consolidation, refused Theodor Herzl’s proposed debt-for-charter arrangement and moved through the 1890s to restrict Zionist land purchases directly which meant Rothschild-funded settlement had to proceed piecemeal, through private transactions and local intermediaries, rather than through any formal national concession. In 1924, Edmond formalized this work by founding the Palestine Jewish Colonization Association (PICA), later merged with the earlier Jewish Colonization Association founded by Baron Maurice de Hirsch, which took over administration of land, agriculture, and settlement infrastructure (Rothschild Foundation, n.d.). Edmond’s own words, recorded in a 1923 report on the organization, frame his ambition as fundamentally collective rather than personal: his stated aim was to induce “other Jewish capitalists to take part in the work” (Jewish Telegraphic Agency, 1923). That single line captures the essential move this history keeps repeating private philanthropy converting itself into a pooled, institutional, and eventually political project. Yet a postcolonial reading complicates any purely celebratory version of this story: Palestine was not empty land awaiting development but a territory already inhabited by an Arab population whose own relationship to land and sovereignty stood in increasing tension with the settlement project Rothschild capital helped build.

The second major intersection between the family and Zionist statehood is diplomatic rather than financial. On November 2, 1917, British Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour addressed his now-famous declaration to Lord Walter Rothschild, asking him to convey it to the Zionist Federation. Its central clause that His Majesty’s Government would “view with favour the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people” was immediately qualified by a second clause insisting that nothing should prejudice the “civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine” (Balfour, 1917). The document’s own language repays close reading: “home” is a softer, more domestic term than “state,” yet it became the textual hinge on which sovereignty, territorial conflict, and displacement would eventually turn. It is worth being precise about what the Declaration was not: it was not a unilateral Rothschild initiative. Chaim Weizmann’s sustained lobbying of the British government is generally credited as decisive in securing it (National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.), and Britain’s own wartime and imperial calculations including the very different promises made separately to Arab leaders through the McMahon–Hussein correspondence shaped the decision as much as any single family’s access to power. Walter Rothschild’s role was to be the trusted address to which a much larger diplomatic negotiation was delivered, not its author.

The collapse of Ottoman authority in Palestine after the First World War, and Britain’s subsequent administration of the territory under the Mandate, expanded Jewish immigration considerably while sharpening Arab opposition. Popular retellings of this period including the video documentaries this project has drawn on throughout tend to narrate it causally and, at times, teleologically: Ottoman decline leads to British control, British control enables immigration, immigration produces demographic change, and demographic change produces partition, as though 1948 were the predetermined endpoint of a story that began in 1917 or even 1882. The historical record resists that tidiness. The Balfour Declaration promised a “national home,” not explicitly a sovereign state, and British policy oscillated for three decades under competing pressures the 1937 Peel Commission’s partition proposal, the restrictive 1939 White Paper, and sustained unrest on both sides. Edward Said’s critique of how imperial discourse represents territories and the peoples living in them is useful here: European governments debated Palestine’s future in terms that gave Palestinian Arabs little independent voice in the process shaping their own land (Said, 1978). At the same time, the urgency behind Jewish migration cannot be separated from the lived reality of European antisemitism, culminating in the Holocaust a history of persecution that gave Zionist claims to refuge a moral weight entirely independent of Rothschild patronage. The resulting conflict, in short, admits no single villain-and-victim framing; it is better understood through the metaphor of competing inheritance, in which different communities inherited memories of persecution, claims to sacred geography, and dispossession, without inheriting anything like equal political power to act on those claims.

Rothschild involvement with the Jewish state did not end at independence, but its character changed decisively from settlement-building to institutional philanthropy. Edmond’s son James oversaw the transfer of much of PICA’s land holdings to the Jewish National Fund, and later generations, operating through the Yad Hanadiv foundation chaired for decades by Jacob Rothschild, funded the construction of Israel’s Knesset, its Supreme Court building, and its National Library (Yad Hanadiv, n.d.). More recently, the family’s commercial presence has re-entered the region on entirely conventional terms: Rothschild & Co opened a Dubai wealth-management office in 2024 and has ranked among the region’s leading M&A advisory firms, growth driven by ordinary market competition rather than any special political leverage. None of Israel’s subsequent development its research-intensive economy, its agricultural innovation in the Negev, its defense industry, or its alliance with the United States can reasonably be attributed to the Rothschild family. These outcomes were produced by state policy, mass immigration, an education system built around applied research, private enterprise, and international alliance-building on a scale no single family’s capital could sustain. The recurring literary device across this whole body of source material is metonymy: “Rothschild” comes to stand in for European finance, Zionist patronage, and elite influence generally, just as “Israel” comes to stand in for military technology, entrepreneurship, and Western alliance. Such compression makes for compelling narration, but it substitutes a memorable part for an intricate whole.

The most defensible conclusion is that the Rothschild dynasty belongs to the history of Israel without being synonymous with it. Popular documentary treatments of this material the same sources analyzed throughout this project frequently gesture toward a more conspiratorial register, using suspense, rhetorical questioning, dramatic irony, and the recurring vocabulary of hidden “secrets” to invite audiences to search for one explanatory force behind enormous historical change. Such techniques make for effective storytelling, and they explain why the same family that funded real settlements has also been blamed, without evidence, for engineered wildfires and secret weather control. But the documented record and the conspiracy narrative operate in entirely different evidentiary registers, and collapsing them does a disservice to both. There is strong, archival evidence for Edmond de Rothschild’s settlement financing, for PICA’s land administration, for Walter Rothschild’s role as the Balfour Declaration’s addressee, and for a century of subsequent institutional philanthropy. There is no comparable evidence that the family secretly engineered Israel’s founding or directs world events from behind the scenes. The more accurate and, properly told, no less remarkable history is a constellation: philanthropic capital helped build early settlements; Ottoman resistance shaped how and where that capital could be spent; Zionist political organization supplied ideological mobilization; British imperial calculation supplied crucial diplomatic conditions; the trauma of persecution and the Holocaust intensified the demand for refuge and statehood; and postwar international politics finally produced the conditions of 1948. Studying the Rothschilds is valuable not because it reveals a single hidden architect of that history, but because it shows, in unusually well-documented detail, how capital, ideology, empire, migration, and memory interact to make history at all.
