Does a Cleanser That Works for Everyone Actually Exist?
The beauty industry loves universal promises.
“Suitable for all skin types.”
It’s reassuring.
The phrase suggests simplicity.
One product.
One solution.
Everyone is happy.
But is that really possible?
Think about coffee for a moment.
Some people love strong espresso.
Others prefer sweet lattes.
Some avoid caffeine entirely.
If a café claimed that one drink was perfect for everyone, most people would be skeptical.
Yet skincare often makes similar promises.
From my observation, cleansing may be one of the clearest examples of why universal solutions are difficult.
People with oily skin often seek freshness and oil control.
People with dry skin often prioritize comfort and hydration.
One person feels reassured by a squeaky-clean finish.
Another sees the same sensation as a warning sign.
Neither perspective is wrong.
They’re simply different.
What’s interesting is that consumers often say they’re searching for the best cleanser.
In reality, they are usually searching for the best cleanser for themselves.
Those are very different goals.
The best running shoe isn’t the best shoe for every runner.
The best mattress isn’t the best mattress for every sleeper.
And perhaps the same is true for cleansing.
Skin changes.
Climate changes.
Lifestyle changes.
Even the same person may want different cleansing experiences in summer and winter.
This may explain why cleansing trends never completely settle.
Consumers are diverse, but marketing prefers simple answers.
Words like hydration, barrier support, and low irritation become popular because they’re easy to communicate.
Yet skin remains more complicated than any slogan.
Perhaps the most useful question isn’t:
“What’s the best cleanser?”
Perhaps it’s:
“What kind of cleansing experience does my skin actually need?”
In the next article, I’ll explore why modern cleansers contain increasingly long ingredient lists and how cleansing products slowly began to behave more like skincare.
