Fashion Is Political: How Willie Chavarría’s HURON Runway Reclaims Our Cultura
Part of the Cultura Edit
I didn’t plan to write about fashion. But when Willie Chavarría’s 2025 Paris show flooded my feed, I couldn’t look away. From the haunting opening — thirty-five men kneeling in silence, dressed in stark white — to the deeply intentional storytelling woven into every look, I knew I was watching history. The collection, titled HURON, wasn’t just about aesthetics; it was a love letter, a protest, and a reclamation. Watching it brought me back to memories of growing up surrounded by Chicano pride — lowriders, white tees, zoot suits, Frost’s La Raza on the radio. That spirit, that resistance, was alive on the runway.

This wasn’t just about fashion. It was about deportations, ICE raids, and the people our government tries to erase. It was about pride and softness and survival stitched into every silhouette. This show made me reflect not only on identity, but on legacy — and what it means to raise brown children in a world that wants them to disappear.
