The Song of the Heart

By Michael Erlewine

The word in Tibetan is ‘Tigle’, which often is translated as “seeds of energy,” also called in sanskrit ‘bindu’ or ‘bija’, meaning point, dot, or drop. Here I suggest that the Tigle is the seed of our own clarity.

However, the tigle is not ‘something’ to get, find, or grasp, but rather something to know, meaning something to experience and take in, to accept and surrender to, to give way to and include, always an expansion. It is nothing for ‘us’ to do. We have done that.

Above all, the ‘Tigle’ is something to ‘be’ in the moment and that moment itself is an actual full immersion or non-dual experience; any experience leaves a trace, and that trace over time becomes a path, our path. And that path is a melody that is sung by the experience itself. There is nobody singing it. It is being sung to us or through us.

To understand the concept of ‘tigle’, consider taking a single grain of sand, grit, or a small pearl between your forefinger and thumb, moving it around, backward and forward, feeling it and focus on it.

That’s the kind of gracefulness and subtlety that is needed in meditation training.

You are gently moving (meaning following) the focus on the Tigle through your consciousness, resting on it and allowing it to move around and circulate. We go where it feels best, true, and authentic. We are listening while we go.

‘We’ are not moving it, but rather we are following its natural movement, allowing it to illustrate and present to us what naturally unfolds, rather than our doing anything.

The natural movement as that experience unfolds itself is a tune or a song, always not losing that spontaneous melody, but rather staying with it, following its natural exposition. We are experiencing and taking it in. We are listening while we are singing it. We are going where the feeling is best. We are the last to know but also the first.

It’s like moving the grain of sand between forefinger and thumb, trying to feel what feels best and most natural. This movement of the grain of sand describes over time a path natural to us, which results as a song, a poem, or a story. We are knowing as we go, listening to our own song that we hear ourself singing.

Instead of our ‘doing’ anything ourselves, sensitivity to the Tigle helps train us to respond to what is, and to rest in that natural moment, ever deepening it.

Always feeling open for the most natural exposition leaves a trace, trail, or path; call it what you want. It is the story, melody, or tune of our exploration. That process of listening, of resting in it, becomes a habit, something we become familiar with and become an expert at. It’s a complete flip from doing anything, a form of improvisation that is natural, authentic, and thus is very jazz-like.

However, this process or habit that is forming is not limited to tunes and music. It works just as well with poetry, writing, and the written Word. Or anything else!

Feeling for. Being open to that spontaneity, that naturalness, is a form of meditation, of creativity. It is what is most natural to us.

It is our finding what is most natural to us, the nature of our own mind, our own polygraph test to know through experience the truth. It is also our own creativity at work, creating.

Is it beautiful? Well, is it? I wrote this about that:

OUTSETTING SONG

That song is sung,

That singing,

Sets inside itself,

Outsetting song,

That sings,

And singing,

Sets itself,

In song.

Song that sang,

Which sung,

Is singing still.

As Bodhicitta is so precious,

May those without it now create it,

May those who have it not destroy it,

And may it ever grow and flourish.
