Does Destruction Create Jobs?

Imagine a boy breaks a bakery window with a stone. The baker now has to call a glassmaker to fix it. People watching say, “See? The broken window created a job. The glassmaker earned money.”

This is where French economist Frédéric Bastiat says people make a mistake.

Yes, the glassmaker gets work. But the baker loses money because he is forced to spend it fixing the broken window. Before the window broke, the baker was planning to buy a new pair of shoes. Now he cannot buy them because all his money went to repairing the glass.

So what happened in the end?

The glassmaker gained money, but the shoemaker lost a customer. The bakery still has the same window it had before. Nothing new was created. Society did not become richer. Money was only used to fix a problem.

That is Bastiat’s main idea. Destruction does not help the economy. It only moves money around while replacing what was already there.

Real economic growth happens when people create new things, not when they spend money fixing damage. If breaking things really made countries rich, then smashing every shop window would make the world wealthy. But obviously, that would only create more loss and more problems.
