Decoding Lord Huron: “Ends of the Earth”

Is this the end my friends?

This song is actually the beginning of one of my favorite albums of the millennium. This is part of a series of stories I am writing about the band Lord Huron. I am starting with the Lonesome Dreams album but we will do some dancing around. The first song on Lonesome Dreams is called, “Ends of the Earth.” I like to think of this song as a prologue to the album. It is a catchy western adventure tune set in the desert. Watch the video below and I will tell you what I know. Let’s learn how to play this game together before the new album, *Long Lost* drops on May 21, 2021.

At the very beginning of this video, you might notice a little cereal box. I think the boys were suggesting that this video is a special prize found in the box. It says Vernon’s on the side and it looks like some corn flakes called “Chubbies”. The box says they are, “Tasty and Fun.” I believe this is an early reference to a character you will hear more about later. His name is Buck Vernon. Who is he? How would I know? I am not a spoiler. I am writing about the first song on Lonesome Dreams right now.

After that little Easter egg, we see a moon and a wolf that is letting out a howl. Later we see a cool little owl. The setting is a sleepy desert town nestled between some Saguaro cacti. That means this is Arizona. Of course, you already knew that if you had done some research. There is a link down below that you can follow to tell you what I already wrote about that.

It is getting late according to the lit-up clock on the side of the station. I hope we catch that midnight train!

“Out there’s a land that time don’t command. I wanna be the first to arrive. No time for ponderin’ why I’m-a wanderin’ Not while we’re both still alive” — Lord Huron, “Ends of the Earth”

What do those lyrics mean? I believe Ben Schneider, our storytelling lead singer, is telling a little tale about what we can expect in the album. The winding river he mentions at the beginning tells me something about home. I am a man that was once a boy that lived on a river. I always wanted to know where it might go. A river never follows a straight path. If you don’t follow that river of your youth, then you aren’t really living. Ben comes from Michigan and I heard he lived near a river. Do you think this could be what he means?

Out western partners in the video are now on the train and then we see that there is a thief. Could this be Buck Vernon? The characters are silhouettes so it is hard to know who is who. We must assume that the cowboy hero is Huron. I think the woman could be Helena. The other dancing man has a ponytail and seems to be wearing a uniform. Is this the Admiral Blaquefut that we saw in the “Lonesome Dreams” video?

The robber on the train is stopped by the cowboy hero that we assume is Huron. Why does he carry a lighter instead of a gun? Is he some sort of crime-fighting pacifist cowboy?

At the end of the “Ends of the Earth” video, weird stuff happens. All those dancing silhouettes get vaporized like a nuclear bomb just went off. Did this love song just show us the end of the Earth? We see some graves that look similar to the ones we saw in the “Lonesome Dreams” video. There is the necklace with the red heart-shaped amulet. It is on top of Huron’s lighter that is shaped like a gun.

This story is starting to make a little sense to me. How is it looking on your end? I am not sure I am explaining this in a way that makes sense yet. I think we need to jump back to the very first album that Ben from Lord Huron put together. It is called Mighty. It is mighty fine and it is only four songs. I think I have a better chance of explaining that one in a single attempt. I will start working on it now!

Stay tuned! May you live until you die world enders.
