Plan To Honour

“A woman came to him with an alabaster jar of expensive perfumed oil, and she poured it on his head as he was at the table.” ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭26‬:‭7‬ ‭NET‬‬

The alabaster jar is mentioned three times in the Bible. Its reference is to a woman who met Jesus and poured her expensive oil on him. Her actions were looked down on by many, even the disciples said it was a waste of such expensive oil. However, Jesus recognized her costly act of honour.

The story of the alabaster jar teaches us about the importance of honour. We need to be intentional about honour, in other words we should plan to honour. The woman had acquired the expensive oil, she waited for the right moment then poured the oil on Jesus. She came prepared to honour Jesus. Honour that costs nothing is not true honour. We need to be thoughtful in honouring God, it should not be rushed or impulsive.

“Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the best part of everything you produce.” ‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭3‬:‭9‬ ‭NLT‬‬

We are to honour the Lord with our wealth and the best part of our produce. The best part of your produce is not cheap, it is the part which will cost you the most. This is the honour that is due our God. Our first and best is what he deserves.

The Lord honours us back when we intentionally honour him. The woman who poured her expensive oil on his head was honored by her name being mentioned wherever the gospel is preached. God does not physically need our wealth, but He loves a cheerful giver.

When we honour God, we acknowledge He is the source of our provision in the first place. We are giving back to Him what He first gave to us and in doing this He blesses us even more.

Prayer: Thank You Jesus for the wisdom in honouring, help us to apply this in our lives and honour You as You rightful deserve and may our very lives also bring You honour and glory. Amen.
