How Diss Tracks have evolved over time and the impact it has had on culture

• I am a big Drake fan so naturally I follow his career and listen to his songs and albums. He recently has had a feud of diss tracks with Kendrick Lamar so I thought it would be interesting to learn more about diss tracks and there origins and the impact it has on culture. I have always been a big rap fan so learning more about rappers like Biggie and 2Pac is very interesting to me personally
• •A diss track is a song that’s made specifically to call someone out, insult them , or respond to beef. Normally the purpose of diss tracks to embarrass the other artist this occurs typically when there is a rivalry or drama where someone feels disrespected. Most diss tracks have a particular style to them that differentiates then from other styles of music. For instance diss tracks usually are aggressive, are full of punchlines, name drops, and direct shots at the other artists.
• •Diss tracks are more of a recent thing in history .In the 1980s it was known as the battle era. Rap started with live battling and one upping. In the 1990s it was the East vs West era. During this time was when some of the most famous diss tracks came out.( 2Pac,Biggie,Ice Cube, N.W.A)B.I.G., used to be a friend of Tupac Shakur, then became involved in the East Coast-West Coast rivalry. In the media, Tupac accused B.I.G. of being involved in a 1994 robbery where Tupac was shot several times. Tupac would also imply that he was having an affair with B.I.G.’s wife, singer Faith Evans, and publicly dissed B.I.G. along with several other East Coast rap artists on the track, “Hit ’Em Up.” When Tupac was murdered in September 1996, B.I.G. did not attend a rap peace event in Harlem was widely criticized and later fueled rumors about his involvement in the killing.(The Notorious B.I.G.,2025)
• •The 2000s was the lyrical era . Focus shifted toward technical bars and reputation. This era was highlighted by the beef between Nas vs Jay Z. In 2001 Nas’s personal life and his music career came to a head when Jay-Z openly dissed Nas on the track “Takeover,” this lead single on his popular album blueprint taunted Nas for not having had a “hot” album since Illmatic.(Bynoe,2025)
• •In the 2010s it was the social media era where beef went public faster due to all the new social media apps. Artists used Twitter, Instagram, and you tube for surprise drops to fuel the battles.
• •Then finally present day the 2020s.Diss tracks go global instantly through TikTok and Instagram, memes, and streaming. The best example of this is the Drake and Kendrick feud last year that became one of the biggest online moments in hip hop history.
• •One of the biggest factors that plays into diss tracks is ego. Hip Hop is a very competitive field where artists are constantly trying to one up each other. They want to prove they’re better, tougher, or have better lyrics than the person they are beefing with. This is supported by the St. James Encyclopedia of Hip Hop Culture that states,”Hip hop culture is confrontational and competitive; as such, it provides a perfect breeding ground for beefs. Artists who beef with other artists or crews will often battle it out, through rap”(Clark,2018)It protects their image. Being disrespected publicily means artists feel like they have to respond publicly to keep their fans and other artists respect. Diss tracks get a lot of clicks. They can boost artist’s number significantly. It is also a big part of rap culture.
• Some examples of diss tracks are the Story of Adidon- this is the killshot between the Drake and Pusha T beef where Pusha T outs Drake’s son that he had supposedly been hiding from the world. One of the most famous examples “ Hit Em Up “ by 2Pac was aimed at the Notorious B.IG and in the songs he threatened to eliminate Biggie and other New York artists.
• •A more recent example that almost everyone has heard about is the Drake Kendrick feud at first he released “ Meet the Grahams “by Kendrick Lamar which was a response to Drake’s diss track “Family Matters”. “Both songs saw the rappers working to pick apart their opponent by excoriating their interior lives. Drake claimed that Kendrick’s business partner fathered one of his kids and that he physically abuses his fiancé, while Kendrick claimed that Drake is a drug addict who employs pedophiles and has another child that he has not publicly acknowledged”(Scott, 2024)They Not like Us went on to win song of the year last year and has also lead to legal issues because in the song he calls drake a Pedophile and this leads him to getting sued for defamation of character. It was reported however that Drake has reached a settlement with UMG(Ramasci,2025).
• The cultural impact of diss tracks cannot be understated, it shapes careers many artists careers rise or fall based on how they respond. Phrases from diss tracks often become memes, quotes or part of history. Not to mention it also showcases their lyrical skill, rap is very competitive and diss tracks let artist show their skills with a pen. Diss tracks can also reflects real issues sometimes its personal or can reflect issues in the industry of politics. Diss tracks create major music landmarks. 2pac vs Biggie, Jay Z vs Nas and Drake vs Kendrick are cultural landmarks. All theses diss tracks leave behind each artists legacies and the songs are still studied to this day. This is supported in an Article by Forbes by Shaun Harper that states, ”It’s the attention to detail for me, especially by Kendrick. Drake and Kendrick are delivering a masterpiece in the artform of diss tracks that will undoubtedly be analyzed by hip-hop heads for years to come”.(Harper,2024) In the end , diss tracks have proven to be much more than flashy musical feuds- they have become a cultural force.
