Fake News: Vaccines and Autism

A Facebook post published in May 2026 made claims directly linking vaccination to the development of childhood autism. While he does not cite a source, the poster provides statistics such as “107 (79%) found evidence consistent with a vaccine-autism link” in a study of 136 cases, all accompanied by an image of a young, scared child behind a syringe. This is not the only platform in which this claim has spread, as thousands have appeared on multiple social media platforms in recent years. Despite the large following behind this belief, proper research makes it clear that this is fake news spreading online.

When searching “link between vaccination and autism” on Google, some of the appearing websites directly refute the claim in their titles. These websites include the John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the World Health Organization (WHO). Skeptical Inquirer’s report also appears, concluding that there is no connection between the MMR vaccine and autism.

History

It is important to understand the history of this claim as well. The alleged correlation between vaccines and autism has been around for nearly 30 years, likely beginning in 1998 as a result of an article written by Andrew Wakefield, linking the MMR, measles-mumps-rubella, vaccine and autism. Since then, there has been a growing population of parents around the world who are against the vaccination of their young children in fear that they may develop autism. However, in 2010, researchers found errors in his study, finding that the 12 children he and his colleagues studied were “carefully selected” and that lawyers representing parents involved in lawsuits related to vaccine manufacturers funded his research. Proponents of this belief often use higher rates of autism and infant vaccinations in recent years as proof, but sites like Politifact refute this belief with the fact that health professionals have a deeper understanding of it today, and that children who would have not been diagnosed before are receiving diagnosis today.

According to science, there is no present link between vaccination and autism. Health organizations such as the CDC insist that parents allow their children to receive vaccination to prevent the development of harmful diseases in their vulnerable children. However, posts similar to the one that sparked this analysis drill these ideas into the minds of cautious parents.
