Birding at UMD from Chickadees to the Northern Shrike

Molly Anderson is part of the Bird Club at UMD. Every week, the Bird Club gathers for sprawling field trips or smaller get-togethers, all for the purpose of sharing their love for birds. Molly keeps a growing list of every bird she’s seen on an app called Merlin Bird ID. Merlin allows birders to identify birds in real time via sound.

Duluth is a hotspot for migratory birds in the fall and spring. The shape of Lake Superior means that birds from Canada hit the lake and funnel down into northern Minnesota and Duluth.

For Molly, the bird club has become much more than a fun club to participate in, but a hobby that goes beyond UMD. For Molly and meny other birders, birding is a way to interact with nature and spend time with others who share a love for birds.
