Movie Review – The Deliverance

You know the old saying, ‘Write what you know’, well that’s what Daniels has been doing for a decade plus. If it’s a Lee Daniels or Tyler P movie then you know it’s going to be filled with traumatic moments within a poverty stricken black family. While I think that it’s admirable that Daniels wanted to switch things up and do an exorcism movie with a predominantly black cast, the writing doesn’t really do much for me. Daniels had two co writers on this film. One of them had experience writing horror films and tv. Unfortunately, the writing had me wanting more.

The performances from its cast (Audra Day, Glenn Close, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Mo’Nique) are good. This movie wouldn’t have been the admirable/lead in the right the direction that it is if they mailed in their performances. Our younger cast members gave good performances. They weren’t afraid to go the extra mile when acting in the scenes that featured heavy stunt work.

This is an admirable step for black horror films. As I stated earlier, the writing isn’t at the best level that it should be and they rely on other kinds of jump scares from other horror movies. I am a person that is always willing to look at the bad and the good in filmmakers. This movie truly made me find SOME good attributes in the way that Lee Daniels directs his films.

Rating: Two stars out of four.
