I’d Skip the iPhone 17 Pro. Here’s Why the 18 Pro Looks More Interesting

Apple’s 2026 iPhone lineup looks busy on paper.

A new “e” model, a foldable iPhone finally stepping into daylight, and the usual Pro refresh that everyone pretends not to care about until September rolls around.

The funny part is that the foldable will steal headlines, but the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max are where Apple’s real long term decisions are showing up.

This feels like an “S” year.

Not flashy. Not safe either. More like Apple quietly rearranging the foundation while telling us it’s business as usual.

Last year already burned the design change card.

So this year? Smaller moves. Deeper ones.

Here’s what’s actually coming to the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max, and where I think Apple is pushing things forward… or just stalling.

1. New Colors (Only one will survive)

Apple is testing Burgundy, Coffee, and Purple.

Only one is expected to make it to production.

If history is any guide, the safest option will win.

Which is also the most disappointing outcome.

2. Under Display Face ID (Finally, but not fully invisible)

This is the big one, even if Apple won’t say it out loud.

Under display Face ID isn’t just a spec bump.

It’s Apple admitting the notch era, then the Dynamic Island era, were transitional.

Some of the Face ID components are expected to move under the display, which means less visible hardware staring back at you all day.

It won’t be a true all screen iPhone yet. That’s still being saved for the anniversary model.

But this is the step that makes that future possible.

The risk? Under display sensors have historically struggled with reliability.

Apple won’t ship this unless it works almost every time. “Almost” isn’t good enough for Face ID.

3. A Smaller Dynamic Island (Or an awkward compromise)

With Face ID going under the display, something has to change up top.

One rumor says Apple shifts the front camera to a top left hole punch, with the Dynamic Island expanding outward from there.

That feels… un Apple. Functional, sure. Elegant? Debatable.

The more believable leaks suggest Apple keeps the Dynamic Island centered but shrinks it by up to 35%.

Only the front camera and infrared camera remain visible.

Same behavior. Less visual noise.

If Apple does anything radical here, I’ll be surprised.

Conservative design usually wins when reliability is on the line.

4. A Brighter Display (Because outside still exists)

Apple is reportedly moving to a next-gen OLED panel that’s “significantly brighter.”

Right now, the iPhone 17 Pro already hits 1,000 nits typical, 1,600 nits HDR, and up to 3,000 nits outdoors.

So this isn’t about bragging rights. It’s about consistency in sunlight.

If you’ve ever tried to read anything on your phone at noon, you know this matters more than most people admit.

5. The Same Overall Design (No surprise here)

If you’re hoping for a visual reset, this isn’t your year.

Expect the same 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch displays.

The same three camera setup. The same camera plateau that refuses to flatten.

Apple already spent its redesign energy last year. This year is about refinement, not reinvention.

The smaller Dynamic Island will be the only change most people actually notice.

6. Minor Design Tweaks That Apple Won’t Talk About

This is where things get vague, but interesting.

One report suggests a slightly transparent Ceramic Shield area on the back.

No context. No visuals. Just a weird idea floating around.

Another rumor feels more realistic: Apple is trying to eliminate the two tone look by better matching the back glass and the aluminum frame.

If you’ve noticed subtle color mismatches before, you’re not imagining them.

This is the kind of change Apple makes quietly and pretends was always perfect.

7. A20 Pro: Apple’s First 2nm Chip

This might be the most important upgrade in the entire phone.

The A20 Pro is expected to use TSMC’s 2nm process.

That’s not just about speed. It’s about efficiency, heat, and battery life, the things that actually affect daily use.

Early reports point to up to 15% better performance and up to 30% better power efficiency compared to the A19.

On paper, that’s boring.

In reality, it could make Apple Intelligence features finally feel invisible instead of heavy.

8. A Less Annoying Camera Control Button

Apple seems ready to admit the Camera Control button was overengineered.

On the iPhone 18 Pro, the button is expected to lose touch sensitivity and haptics.

Pressure only input. Fewer accidental swipes. Lower manufacturing cost.

This is a rare case of Apple simplifying something after launch instead of doubling down.

9. Variable Aperture (A Real Camera Upgrade, If Done Right)

This one has real potential, and real risk.

A variable aperture system would let the camera physically control how much light hits the sensor.

That means better low light shots and more natural depth control, not software blur guessing at hair edges.

There are also reports of a teleconverter system being tested to boost optical zoom.

If Apple nails this, it’s a serious shift.

If it’s buried in auto modes no one understands, it’ll be wasted.

10. Apple’s C2 Modem Replacing Qualcomm

Apple has been slowly inching away from Qualcomm.

The C1 showed up in the iPhone 16e.

The C1X followed in the iPhone Air. The Pro models stayed conservative.

That changes here. The iPhone 18 Pro lineup is expected to get Apple’s C2 modem, with better power efficiency, improved stability, and faster 5G.

Modems aren’t exciting, until your signal drops.

Apple wants control here, even if it takes a few shaky generations.

11. N1 (or N2) for Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, and Thread

Apple’s in-house wireless chips are spreading quietly.

Whether it’s the N1 or a newer revision, expect support for Wi‑Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread networking.

This matters more for ecosystem reliability than raw speed.

Fewer third party dependencies. Fewer edge-case bugs.

At least, that’s the theory.

12. Stainless Steel Vapor Chamber Cooling

Cooling is the least glamorous upgrade, and often the most necessary.

A stainless steel vapor chamber could help reduce thermal throttling and keep performance stable under sustained load.

You won’t notice it when scrolling.

You’ll notice it when you’re recording video, gaming, or pushing AI features hard.

13. Thicker Body, Bigger Battery

Apple might be giving up the thinness race.

The iPhone 18 Pro models are rumored to be thicker and heavier, which likely means more battery capacity.

If this results in the best battery life ever on an iPhone Pro Max, most people won’t complain, even if the phone feels like a brick.

Thin phones are overrated when they die early.

14. 5G Satellite Internet (Still a question mark)

Apple is reportedly exploring true 5G satellite data, not just emergency features.

A partnership with SpaceX is possible, but nothing is locked in.

This could be transformative for remote use, or it could remain expensive, limited, and rarely used.

Right now, it’s promising. Not proven.

Finally

The iPhone 18 Pro doesn’t feel like a product chasing attention.

It feels like Apple tightening bolts.

Under display Face ID, a smaller Dynamic Island, a 2nm chip, in house wireless hardware, these aren’t crowd pleasers.

They’re long game moves.

Whether that’s exciting or frustrating depends on what you want from an iPhone in 2026.

I’m not fully convinced yet. But I’m paying attention.
