PSA: Your Protein Shake May Contain Lead

Science Fiction becomes Science Fact

I just found this out. On the side of my huge plastic jar of Soylent Meal Replacement Shake it says “CALIFORNIA WARNING Can expose you to lead. A reproductive toxicant.” I decided to go online to ask about this. Here is what Google says:

Independent testing has found that Soylent products contain lead at levels far above California’s “safe harbor” limit for reproductive health. In one study, one serving of Soylent 1.5 contained lead concentrations 12–25 times higher than the state’s safe threshold LessWrong. This means that even a single daily serving could expose you to lead at levels that California law considers unsafe for reproductive health.

How Lead Gets Into Soylent

Lead is a naturally occurring heavy metal that can be present in food and supplements in trace amounts. In Soylent’s case, the contamination appears to be linked to:

· Soy protein isolate — the primary protein source — which is highly processed and may absorb trace metals from processing equipment or raw materials Diets in Review**+1**.

· Other ingredients — such as maltodextrin, oils, and additives — which can also carry trace heavy metals if sourced from contaminated raw materials or processed in facilities with lead exposure risks.

Because Soylent is marketed as a meal replacement for all adults, and some users consume multiple servings daily, chronic exposure is possible if lead levels remain high LessWrong.

Health Risks of Lead Exposure

Lead is a neurotoxin that can cause:

· Neurological damage (learning disabilities, memory problems, lower IQ) LessWrong**+1**

· Kidney and cardiovascular issues

· Reproductive health problems

· Developmental harm in children and pregnant women

Even low-level, long-term exposure can accumulate in the body and cause lasting damage cleanproteinlist.com.

I am mortified and horrified. I have been using these products for months, to upplement my nutrition and to combat the sarcopenia which I now know is probably attributable to my prostate cancer. I have recommended them to friends.

It is outrageous that in trying to maintain my muscle mass I have been ingesting a substance that may bring me closer to dementia and heart problems!

I fell for the clever advertising — the way the Soylent Corporation tied their product into the classic movie of my generation, Soylent Green. How ironic that they should also fulfill the Sci Fi story’s prediction of lying about their products to the public!

The website CleanProtein.com lists protein supplements that are safe to take, as well as many popular ones which are not. All based on independent testing.

It gets harder and harder to survive in this world, especially when corporations are allowed to bypass consumer protection laws. Who the hell can you trust with your health?

Thank goodness for California’s more rigorous standards, which makes them put the warning label on their jar.
