What Really Changes After Death?

Lately, I’ve received a few comments asking whether we keep our personality after death or become something completely different when we enter the afterlife, I have also been asked whether we suddenly become all knowing. From my own experience communicating with loved ones in spirit, our personality doesn’t disappear after death, and we don’t suddenly become all knowing. While our perspective broadens, we remain recognizably ourselves.

Our Personality Doesn’t Disappear

The loved ones in spirit I connect with are still recognizably themselves to their loved ones here. The quiet ones are still quiet, and the stubborn ones are still stubborn. If a departed loved one had a great sense of humor, that humor will come through during a mediumship session, if they were reserved, they will communicate with me in a much quieter way. Their personality doesn’t disappear the moment they leave their physical body. As I always tell people, death isn’t a personality transplant.

Greater Awareness Isn’t the Same as Knowing Everything

I think some people confuse loved ones in spirit having a broader perspective with suddenly knowing everything, but they’re not the same thing. From my experience, spirits often have a much broader understanding than they did while they were here on Earth. They can see situations from a different perspective because they are no longer experiencing life through a physical body, human emotions, or the limitations of the brain. Many spirits have told me they now understand why certain things happened, they recognize lessons they couldn’t see while they were here. They also often have greater compassion, not only for themselves but for their loved ones here. But that doesn’t mean they suddenly know everything.

If you’ve ever had a mediumship session, you’ve probably noticed that spirits often don’t have an answer to every question or problem you have. Sometimes they can’t answer certain questions, but most often, they simply don’t know. If every spirit became instantly all knowing the moment they died, that wouldn’t happen.

Learning Doesn’t End at Death

Not long ago, I re-read The Spirits’ Book by Allan Kardec, and I was thinking about one of the things that is described throughout the book in different ways, that learning is something that continues after death. It doesn’t describe spirits as suddenly becoming all knowing, it presents the afterlife as a place where we continue to grow, gain understanding, and develop over time. If we don’t suddenly become all knowing the moment we die, then it makes sense that learning wouldn’t end there either. There would still be more to understand, more to experience, and more to discover. I know that growth doesn’t belong only to this life, it continues in the afterlife.

I’ve learned through mediumship that death doesn’t magically erase who we are, it doesn’t suddenly give us every answer in the universe, what it does seem to do is remove many of the limitations of physical life. Without the noise of the world, the stress of everyday living, and the demands of the human mind, spirits are able to see life more clearly than they did before. That broader perspective is real, but their learning doesn’t end, their understanding continues to grow, and I know the afterlife isn’t the end of our journey.
