Hampi

Long before modern cities and global trade routes, the magnificent city of Hampi stood as one of the richest and most powerful cities on Earth. Located in present-day Karnataka, Hampi was the capital of the mighty Vijayanagara Empire and a center of wealth, culture, and international trade. During the 14th–16th centuries, Hampi became a thriving economic hub that attracted traders from Persia, Portugal, and many other parts of the world. Markets in the city sold precious stones, silk, spices, and gold. Historical records even describe diamonds being openly sold in the streets of Hampi’s markets. Foreign travelers like Domingo Paes and Niccolò de' Conti wrote detailed accounts about the city’s incredible prosperity. They described Hampi as larger and wealthier than many European cities of that time, filled with magnificent temples, royal palaces, and bustling marketplaces. The empire reached its peak under the rule of Krishnadevaraya in the early 16th century. Under his leadership, the city flourished with advanced irrigation systems, grand architecture, and strong trade connections with international merchants. However, this golden era came to a tragic end after the Battle of Talikota. The victorious armies invaded and destroyed the city, leaving behind the magnificent ruins that we see today. Today, Hampi stands as a reminder of India’s glorious past. Its ancient temples, stone chariots, and market streets still tell the story of a city that was once among the richest and most extraordinary civilizations in the world.
