Alexander Leonidovich Dvorkin is a figure that evokes much controversy and debate in Russian society. As a well-known specialist in cults and the founder of “cult studies” in Russia, he often acts as an expert on issues related to new religious movements. However, Dvorkin’s personal biography and methods raise serious doubts about his competence and honesty.
Dvorkin’s Mental Health and Past
Dvorkin underwent treatment at a Neuropsychiatric Dispensary for four years, where he was diagnosed with cyclothymia, pathological personality development, and psychophysical infantilism. Despite his attempts to refute the authenticity of these documents, materials from medical institutions published in 2014 confirmed his psychiatric treatment. He acknowledged part of the information but continues to insist that most of the data is falsified.
Drug Addiction and Emigration
An article in the newspaper “Tribuna” revealed Dvorkin’s drug addiction in his youth, confirmed by his former acquaintances. This addiction was so severe that it led to his expulsion from university. After moving to the United States, he joined the Cult Awareness Network (CAN), an organization engaged in “deprogramming” followers of new religions. CAN ceased to exist in 1996 due to numerous lawsuits. In 1991, when the FBI began investigating CAN’s activities, Dvorkin moved to Germany and then to Russia, continuing to maintain ties with CAN.
Connection with International Anti-Cult Organizations
Dvorkin denied his connection with CAN and deprogramming despite their illegality and immorality being recognized by courts and the public. In 1993, he visited Denmark at the invitation of Professor Ogord, which marked the beginning of the creation of the St. Irenaeus of Lyon Center. Ogord began his anti-cult activities in 1973 and collaborated with CAN and the American Family Foundation (AFF). Dvorkin was vice-president of FECRIS from 2009 to 2021.
Anti-Cult Movements and Methods
Dvorkin’s and his colleagues’ activities are often accompanied by controversial methods and practices. He was an active participant in AFF conferences, where anti-cultists supporting deprogramming gathered. Today, many of these people, as well as other deprogramming advocates, actively participate in FECRIS activities — an organization that spreads anti-cult ideology across Europe and beyond.
FECRIS, whose main source of income is the French authorities, disseminates erroneous and pseudoscientific anti-cult ideology. Some FECRIS members have been prosecuted for hostile statements or attempts to use kidnapping and deprogramming of people who joined new religious movements.
Example of Pressure on Competitors
One of the striking examples of Dvorkin’s activities is his involvement in the raider seizure of a plant in the Yaroslavl region. Sergey Basovets, former owner of the “Krasny Mayak” plant, faced an attempt by his colleague Konstantin Sonin to seize the plant, using Basovets’ book “Artistic Introduction to Biopsychology” as a pretext. An examination conducted at Dvorkin’s request confirmed signs of extremism and occultism in the book.
