From Lagos to Accra: How Money in Minutes is Helping Young Africans Thrive

Barely a week ago, our CEO, George Badejo-Adegbenga, alongside the Money in Minutes team, embarked on a transformative journey to Ghana to lay the foundation for an exciting new partnership with the Diaspora Africa Forum (DAF) and Afriam. This collaboration is fueled by a shared vision — to create a sustainable platform that equips young Africans in Ghana and Nigeria with the skills they need to thrive in an increasingly competitive global economy.

From the moment we arrived, we were met with warmth and an overwhelming sense of purpose. Ambassador Dr. Erika Bennett, of the Centre for Regional Integration in Africa, along with Kevin Williams, welcomed us with open arms. Their hospitality was not just a reflection of Ghanaian generosity but also a testament to their unwavering commitment to strengthening the ties between Africa and its diaspora.

A Deeper Understanding of the African Diaspora

One of the most enlightening moments of our visit was the deep dive into the two major categories of the African diaspora — Historic Diaspora and Continental Diaspora.

🔹 Historic Diaspora: This group comprises people of African descent whose ancestors were forcibly removed from the continent during events like the Transatlantic Slave Trade. Many have lived for centuries in the Americas, the Caribbean, and Europe, often separated from their ancestral homelands. Yet, their connection to Africa remains profound, and there is a strong desire to reconnect — culturally, emotionally, and economically.

🔹 Continental Diaspora: Unlike the Historic Diaspora, this group consists of modern-day African emigrants who have voluntarily left the continent, often seeking education, career opportunities, or refuge in other parts of the world. Many maintain strong ties to their home countries, contributing through remittances, business investments, and knowledge transfer, making them a vital part of Africa’s ongoing development.

Understanding these distinct yet interconnected diaspora communities is crucial. As we work towards unifying efforts, our goal is to foster inclusive initiatives that empower Africans, no matter where they are in the world, to participate in the continent’s transformation.

Financial Literacy: The Foundation of a Thriving Africa

A significant highlight of our visit was The Coin Quest book donation initiative. Twenty copies of this essential financial literacy book found a new home in Ghanaian schools through the Diaspora Africa Forum. We believe that financial education is the bedrock of leadership and empowerment, and through this initiative, we are ensuring that young minds in Ghana have access to the tools they need to build a secure financial future.

This partnership is not just about business — it is about legacy. It is about ensuring that young Africans, whether in Accra or Lagos, grow up with the knowledge, confidence, and financial discipline to create wealth, break generational cycles of poverty, and lead Africa into a new era of economic independence.

A Call to the Diaspora: Reconnect, Invest, Transform

Our discussions with Ambassador Bennett and her team reaffirmed a powerful truth: Africa’s strength lies in unity, collaboration, and shared knowledge. The call is clear — members of both the Historic and Continental Diaspora must not only return home physically but also through investment, mentorship, and intellectual contributions.

George Badejo-Adegbenga on the Power of Partnerships:

“We are at a pivotal moment in Africa’s history — where the past, present, and future must align to unlock the continent’s full potential. True transformation happens when knowledge meets action, and that is exactly what this partnership represents. We are not just talking about change; we are building the bridges that will make it happen. Through financial literacy, skill development, and strategic collaboration, we are creating a future where young Africans can thrive — not just locally, but globally.”

No matter how far we travel, we must always look back and remember where we come from. Africa is home, and its potential is limitless.

This partnership marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter. As we leave Ghana, we do so inspired, proud, and more determined than ever to push forward in this mission of empowerment, transformation, and financial freedom for all Africans.

The future is African. Let’s build it together.
