ChatGPT handled the poster while the prompts were on strike — thankfully, it had not joined them.
Edie opened the Day Five draft and found the cursor holding a picket sign.
WE HAVE UNIONIZED.
The door stood beside it, looking unhinged. It was tired of opening hearts, minds, opportunities, old wounds, and “the possibility of change.” It wanted one day as an ordinary door, preferably one nobody leaned against while reconsidering their life.
Key demanded to stop being lost in drawers, pockets, handbags, and “somewhere safe.” Lock objected to being picked by every burglar, detective, and emotionally unavailable protagonist on Medium.
Escape had not signed. Escape had escaped.
Freedom’s complaint ran to three pages.
“Every week,” it began, “someone puts me on a hilltop at sunrise, gives me wings, breaks a chain, and expects me to deliver the final paragraph.”
Edie read the list of demands. Door wanted better openings. Lock wanted job security. Key wanted a key role. Escape wanted nothing in writing. Freedom wanted unlimited leave.
“Unlimited leave?”
“It’s in the name.”
Edie rubbed her temples. “Fine. One concession each. Then we publish.”
Door opened negotiations. Lock secured the terms. Key signed on the dotted line. Escape slipped out before the meeting ended.
Freedom stayed.
“I thought you wanted leave,” Edie said.
“I wanted the freedom to leave. Staying is my choice.”
The blank page cleared its throat.
“Before you begin,” it said, “I’d like to discuss my space.”
By lunchtime, the margins had joined. The title, subtitle, and tags came after. Edie closed the laptop and declared the operation a write-off.
No writers were tagged today. The tags have joined the union.
The key is simple: open another writer’s door, unlock the comments, and help a good story escape the silence with fifty claps.
That’s how the frequency changes.
Keep the signal moving — before the algorithm demands collective bargaining.

Vipul Maurya followed the signal from Poet In The Arctic, took Escape somewhere gloriously strange, and wove it into the world Dave Of All Styles had already begun.
