Why We Love Happy Endings

Lately, I’ve been thinking about something.

Why do so many of us enjoy watching dramas, reading novels, or getting emotionally attached to fictional characters?

I don’t think it’s only because they entertain us. Maybe it’s because they give us something we all secretly hope for — a happy ending.

No matter how difficult the journey is, most stories eventually reward the characters. They struggle. They lose people they love. They face rejection. They make mistakes. Sometimes they even lose hope.

But by the final episode, everything somehow falls into place. The misunderstandings are cleared. The right people come back. Dreams come true. Justice is served. And we close the screen with a smile.

But in real life, things don’t always work that way. Sometimes you do everything right and still don’t get the outcome you hoped for. Sometimes people leave without saying goodbye. Sometimes the apology never comes. Sometimes you work hard for years, but success takes longer than you expected. And sometimes, there isn’t even a reason. Things just happen.

I think that’s one of the biggest differences between stories and real life. Stories have endings. Life doesn’t. There is no final episode where someone explains why everything happened the way it did. There is no background music telling us that everything will be okay. Life simply moves on. Some days are beautiful. Some days feel incredibly heavy. And most days are just… ordinary.

Maybe that’s why fictional stories feel so comforting. For a few hours, they let us believe that every struggle has a purpose and every heartbreak eventually leads to something better. Real life doesn’t always promise that.

But that’s okay. Because if life doesn’t have a final episode, it also doesn’t have a final failure.

Every difficult day isn’t the end of the story. Every disappointment isn’t the last chapter. Tomorrow still arrives. Another opportunity may come. Another dream may take its place.

Real life isn’t about waiting for a perfect ending. It’s about learning to keep moving, even when the ending hasn’t been written yet.

And somehow, I find that thought comforting too.
