Why I’m Hitting the Gym in My 70s (and Loving Every Minute of It)

Staying Strong, Balanced, and Independent in the Winter Season of Life

I’ll be honest with you — I don’t move like I used to. At 77 years old, I’ve got a few more creaks and groans than I did in my 40s. But that doesn’t stop me from getting up every day with one goal in mind: to stay active for as long as I possibly can.

That’s not just a nice thought. It’s a mission.

Because if I want to enjoy this part of my life — travel, work in the yard, play with grandkids, take long walks with my wife — I need to earn that mobility every single day.

My Fitness Regimen (a.k.a. What Keeps This Old Man Going)

Let me break it down for you. This isn’t about training for a marathon or competing in bodybuilding shows. It’s about function. Balance. Strength. Energy. Confidence. And frankly — dignity.

🏋️‍♂️ Weight Training (Every Other Day)

My daughter gave me the gentle nudge I needed to get serious about lifting weights. She was right — we lose muscle mass as we age, and that can affect everything from posture to confidence to our ability to stay upright.

I use machines at the gym because they’re easier on the joints and allow me to control the motion. I’m not loading up heavy plates — this isn’t about ego. It’s lighter weights with more reps to build endurance, tone, and joint stability.

🚶 10,000 Steps a Day (No Excuses)

This is non-negotiable. I religiously hit 10,000 steps a day, and most days, it’s more. A walk in the yard, a stroll after lunch, or errands on foot — it adds up.

Sometimes, if the weather is nice or I feel stiff, I’ll take a second walk in the afternoon. It clears my head and keeps my legs strong.

🧘 Tai Chi with the Mad Muscle App

Balance is everything as we get older. One bad fall can set you back for months — or worse. That’s why I use the Mad Muscle app on my phone for Tai Chi.

Tai Chi isn’t just slow dancing in the park. It’s controlled movement, focused breathing, and a proven way to improve stability and mental clarity.

The app schedules my sessions and lets me tailor the intensity and length. Whether I’ve got 10 minutes or 30, I can get it done — right from the living room.

Why This Matters (And Why You Should Start Today)

Too many folks in their 60s, 70s, and 80s settle into the recliner and let time wear them down. Not me. And hopefully — not you either.

I want to be able to:

  • Carry my groceries.
  • Climb stairs without a second thought.
  • Keep my independence.
  • Travel without worrying about my legs giving out.
  • And maybe, just maybe, inspire someone else to do the same.

I’ve lived a full life — but I’m not done living it yet. And neither are you.

The Bottom Line

You don’t have to do what I do. But you do have to do something.

Move your body. Build strength. Protect your balance. Take that walk. Do that stretch. Download that app. Show up for your life — because it’s still yours to live.

Let’s stay active together. We’ve got too much to enjoy to sit this one out.
