I Cold-Emailed 50 Brands With Zero Followers — Here Is What Happened
Let me be honest with you. When I first heard that brands would pay complete strangers to film short videos of their products, I thought it was a scam. Who would pay someone with 1,200 Instagram followers to create an ad?

Turns out, a lot of brands will. And I have the receipts to prove it.
Over the last 30 days I sent exactly 50 cold emails to skincare, tech, and lifestyle brands. I tracked every single one in a Notion CRM — the opens, the replies, the ghosting, the deals. Below is the unfiltered data and the five lessons that changed my approach completely.
(If you want the exact templates and CRM I used, I have linked everything at the bottom of this article.)
The Numbers: 50 Emails, 30 Days
Here is my actual pipeline breakdown:
- Emails sent: 50
- Opened (confirmed via tracking): 38 (76%)
- Replied: 11 (22%)
- Requested my portfolio or rates: 7 (14%)
- Signed a paid deal: 3 (6%)
- Total revenue from 3 deals: $1,350
A 6% close rate might sound low, but consider the math: each email took me about 4 minutes to personalize. That is 200 minutes of work — roughly 3.5 hours — for $1,350 in revenue.
That is $385 per hour of pitching effort.

Lesson 1: Nobody Cares About Your Follower Count
My first 15 emails opened with my follower stats. Zero replies.
The moment I switched to leading with hook ideas for their specific product, replies started flowing in.
Brand managers do not need influencers. They need ad creatives that convert. When you frame yourself as a video asset producer rather than an influencer, you are suddenly competing against expensive creative agencies — not other creators.
The pitch that worked best was under 120 words. It had three elements:
- A compliment about their recent campaign
- Two specific video hook ideas tailored to their product
- A link to my live Notion portfolio

Lesson 2: Your Portfolio Is Your Sales Page
Seven brands asked to see my work. The three that converted all said the same thing: my live Notion portfolio looked clean and professional.
I did not use a PDF media kit. I built an interactive Notion page with embedded video clips, a clear rate card, and my contact details. It loads instantly on mobile, the brand manager can see my content style in seconds, and I can update it in real time without resending files.
Static PDFs feel dated. A live web portfolio signals that you are a professional who takes their business seriously.

Lesson 3: Contracts Save You From Nightmare Clients
My second deal almost went sideways. The brand approved my video draft, then asked me to reshoot the entire thing with a different angle — for free.
Because I had a signed service agreement limiting revisions to one round of minor edits, I was protected.
Always get a contract signed before you start filming. It should cover:
- *The number of deliverables
- Revision limits
- Usage rights duration
- Payment terms (50% upfront is standard)
- Late fee penalties*
Lesson 4: Follow-Ups Win Deals
Of my 3 closed deals, two came from follow-up emails— not the original pitch. One brand replied on my third follow-up, 12 days after the initial email.
Most creators send one email, hear nothing, and assume rejection. The truth is that PR managers are drowning in messages. A polite follow-up 4 days later is not annoying — it is expected.
I set up my Notion CRM with automatic follow-up date reminders. Every 4 days, I check the pipeline and send a short, two-line bump email. This single habit doubled my reply rate.

Lesson 5: Systematize Everything
The biggest unlock was treating pitching like a system, not a hustle. I created reusable email templates for different niches (beauty, tech, lifestyle), a Kanban board to track deal stages, and a financial ledger to log payments and expenses.
When you have a system, scaling becomes effortless. Instead of reinventing the wheel for each brand, you duplicate the template, swap in the brand-specific details, and hit send.
