Mulberry silk accounts for nearly 90% of global silk production, making it the most dominant silk fibre in the world.
But this dominance did not happen by accident.
It happened because Mulberry silk is predictable.

The Silkworm That Changed Textiles
Mulberry silk comes from a domesticated silkworm called Bombyx mori.
For thousands of years, humans have selectively bred this species to produce silk with remarkable consistency.
Bombyx mori feeds exclusively on mulberry leaves, and over time it has become so specialised that it can no longer survive in the wild.
It exists purely as part of the silk production ecosystem.
This long partnership between humans and silkworms created one of the world’s oldest textile industries.
Why Mulberry Silk Became the Standard
Mulberry silk has several structural advantages that make it ideal for textile manufacturing.

A single cocoon can produce hundreds of metres of continuous silk filament, which can be reeled into fine yarn without breaks.
The result is a fibre that is strong, smooth and consistent.
Consistency is what allows silk production to scale.
The Industrial Backbone of Silk
Mulberry silk production combines agriculture and textile manufacturing.
Farmers grow mulberry trees. Silkworms are reared in controlled environments. Cocoons are harvested and reeled into thread. The silk is then woven into fabric.
Because this process can be standardised, Mulberry silk became the industrial backbone of the global silk economy.
Today, the largest silk producers include:
• China • India • Vietnam • Thailand
China alone produces more than half of the world’s silk.
The Trade-Offs of Efficiency
Mulberry silk’s strength lies in its optimisation.
But optimisation requires control.
Mulberry sericulture depends on:

Unlike wild silks that grow in forests, Mulberry silk is fully managed production.
