It is incredible to think about the fact that a single hour of sunlight could power our entire civilization for a year and it really puts the Sun’s absolute dominance into perspective.

The Sun is not just a bright object in the sky. It is the engine behind almost every major source of energy we use on Earth.

Hydropower begins with the Sun. Solar heat evaporates water from oceans, lakes, and rivers. That water vapors rises, forms clouds, and returns as rain. The rainwater fills rivers and streams, and when that water flows downward, we use its motion to generate electricity.

Wind energy also begins with the Sun. The Sun does not heat every part of Earth equally. Some regions become warmer than others, creating differences in temperature and air pressure. Air moves from one region to another, and that movement becomes wind. When we use wind turbines, we are indirectly using solar energy.

The energy in food also comes from the Sun. Green plants capture sunlight through photosynthesis and convert it into chemical energy. Animals and humans get energy by eating plants or by eating other animals that depend on plants. In this way, the energy inside food is stored sunlight.

Even wood, hay, straw, and other plant products contain energy that originally came from the Sun. When they burn, the chemical energy stored inside them is released as heat and light.

Fossil fuels also have a deep connection with solar energy. Coal, petrol, diesel, and natural gas were formed from the remains of ancient plants and animals buried under the Earth for millions of years. Since those plants and animals once depended on sunlight, fossil fuels are also an indirect form of ancient solar energy.

So when we look carefully, hydropower, wind energy, food energy, biomass, and fossil fuels are all connected to the same original source.

The Sun is not only the source of daylight.

It is the great energy engine of Earth.
