Sometimes the most meaningful conversations happen when we least expect them.
Maybe it’s our energy that makes virtual strangers feel comfortable opening up. Maybe it’s simply being present enough to notice when someone wants to connect. I’m not sure. What I do know is that I always welcome those conversations.
Yesterday afternoon, I was floating in the pool, as I do most days after spending the morning writing. A new “couple” was there. I have to put couple in quotation marks because, as it turns out, they were just friends.
They had great energy and were easy to talk to. Although I’m naturally a bit introverted, I find it refreshing to socialize after being cooped up with my computer all morning. Especially when the conversation moves beyond small talk.
Like most people who have just met, we started with the basics. What do you do for work? How long have you lived here? Where are you from?
And then, out of nowhere, the conversation took a different turn.
“You know,” Bob (not his real name) said, “I’ve been thinking a lot lately that we really need to appreciate every day of life. Do you agree?”
Without hesitation, I replied, “Oh, absolutely.”
He then shared a story about his uncle, someone he was very close to. Recently, his uncle had slipped, fallen, and suffered a serious head injury. Physically he survived, but cognitively he never fully recovered.
As Bob spoke, I could see the sadness in his eyes.
I felt honored that someone I had only just met trusted me enough to share something so personal and meaningful.
We went on to discuss other things, but his words stayed with me long after the conversation ended.
Maybe his story stayed with me because it was such a simple reminder of something we all know but often forget: life can change in an instant.
How often do we rush through our days assuming tomorrow is guaranteed?
We become distracted by deadlines, errands, social media, and endless to-do lists. We tell ourselves we’ll slow down later. We’ll call that friend next week. We’ll take that trip someday. We’ll enjoy life once things settle down.
But life has a way of reminding us that nothing is promised.
Sometimes all it takes is one unexpected moment to change everything.
Bob’s story wasn’t really about a fall. It was about perspective.
It was a reminder to slow down. To pay attention. To appreciate ordinary moments while we still have them.
Tell people you love them.
Take the trip.
Eat the brownie.
Stop during your walk and smell the flowers.
Strike up a conversation with a stranger.
Watch the sunset.
Call your mom.
Laugh a little longer.
These small moments may seem insignificant while they’re happening, but when we look back, they are often the moments that made life meaningful.
Final Thoughts
Sometimes the most meaningful lessons don’t come from books, podcasts, or seminars. Sometimes they come from a casual conversation in a swimming pool with someone we may never see again.
Yesterday, Bob reminded me of something I already knew but needed to hear again: life is fragile, time is precious, and none of us knows what tomorrow will bring.
So appreciate today.
Not because everything is perfect.
Not because life is easy.
But because this moment, right now, is one we will never get back.
Every day is a gift.
Let’s not wait for a tragedy to remind us that today was the gift.
