For everyone who has a healing story they have never quite told accurately

**What Healed Me And Why It Actually Worked—A** Writing Challenge

Not the miracle version. The real one.

Not a member? Read here.

I want to begin with a small confession.

I have spent a fair portion of my adult life being suspicious of the word “healing.”

No, I very much believe in recovery! I have seen it, lived it, and watched it happen to people I love. The reason for my hesitation is that the word so often arrives wrapped in explanations that ask you to stop asking questions. And I am constitutionally incapable of stopping asking questions.

So when Marziya🤩😍🌈❤️😇🏖️🌹 generously extended her invitation to host a writing challenge here at The Mind-Body Nexus, I did not want to bring a prompt that asks you to describe your transformation. I wanted to bring one that asks you to examine it.

There is a difference. And I think it produces better writing.

Here is what I have noticed, across my own experience and across years of reading other people’s accounts of recovery and renewal: the story we tell about what healed us is almost always more interesting than the headline version.

Someone says, "I meditated my way out of anxiety."

What they mean, if you ask them carefully, is "I learned to sit with discomfort for ten minutes at a time without running from it, and that changed how I responded to everything else."

That is not a mystical statement. That is a precise and remarkable one. It deserves to be written precisely.

Someone says, "I healed my gut, and my life changed."

What they mean, if you trace it honestly, is "I stopped eating in ways that were making me feel terrible, I slept better, I had more energy, and the things that had felt impossible began to feel manageable."

Again… not mysterious. Astonishing, actually, when you look at it clearly.

The honest version is always more powerful than the shorthand. And I think you know that too, which is why you are a writer.

The Challenge

Write about a time you recovered—from illness, from burnout, from grief, from a season of your life that was quietly dismantling you—and reflect honestly on what made the difference.

Not what you wished had made the difference. Not the version you tell at dinner parties.

The actual mechanism, as best as you can reconstruct it.

Was it sleep? Was it one conversation that reframed everything? Was it moving your body when you least wanted to? Was it finally eating the way you knew you should? Was it leaving a situation, or a relationship, or a version of yourself?

Write about it the way a curious person would… not a believer, not a skeptic, but someone genuinely interested in understanding how their own life works.

You do not need to have arrived anywhere. You do not need a resolution. You need only a memory, an honest eye, and the willingness to look at your own experience without flinching.

What we are looking for

Personal essays, reflective narratives, even poetry—all are welcome.

We are not looking for advice. We are not looking for listicles titled “Five Things That Healed My Soul.”

We are looking for the particular.

A specific morning. A specific decision. A specific moment when something shifted, and the texture of what the days felt like before and after.

The more concrete and personal your writing, the more universal it will feel to the reader. That is the paradox at the centre of all good personal writing, and it is worth trusting.

There is no required length. Write as long as the story needs. Not more.

Submission Guidelines

Submit your drafts to The Mind-Body Nexus publication.

Tag me, Manmeet Singh Bhatia (@manmeetsinghbhatia), and Marziya🤩😍🌈❤️😇🏖️🌹(@venusmarzi), in your story.

Submission deadline: 5 July 2026

The piece must be original and unpublished elsewhere.

Both new and established writers are welcome. If you have been reading here without writing, this is a reasonable moment to start.

A Final Word

I am 54 years old. I have had my share of seasons that needed recovering from, and my share of explanations for why recovery happened that turned out, on closer inspection, to be only partially true. What I have found is that the honest account—the one where I said, “I think this is what actually helped, and here is why I think so”—was always more useful to me than the tidy one.

I hope you will bring us your honest account.

I am genuinely looking forward to reading what you find when you look carefully.
