Indoor Cricket vs. Box Cricket: Same Cage, Different Game

From packed arenas to buzzing turf centers, cricket is being reimagined in tighter spaces — faster, louder, and closer than ever. Two of the most exciting formats leading this Cricket revolution? Indoor Cricket and Box Cricket.

At first glance, they may seem similar — nets all around, fast-paced games, shorter formats. But step into the arena, and you’ll realize these are two distinct formats with their own rules, cultures, and ambitions.

So let’s break it down. Indoor vs. Box. Structured vs. Street. Pro vs. Passionate.

The Origin Story: Different Roots

Indoor Cricket was born in Australia in the late 1970s. It evolved into a globally recognized, governed sport with set rules, national teams, and World Cups. Today, it has federations, rankings, and serious player pathways.

Box Cricket, on the other hand, is pure India. It grew out of space constraints in metros — a passion-driven, hyperlocal format that turned parking lots and rooftops into battlegrounds. It’s casual, and chaotic.

The Format: Rules Make the Game

Indoor Cricket Rules Explained

Indoor cricket might look like just another version of the sport we all know — but it has its own rulebook, and mastering it takes both skill and smarts.

Here’s a breakdown of how the game works:

Team Composition

  • Each team has 8 players.
  • All 8 players bowl and all 8 bat — in pairs.

Batting Pairs System

  • Batters bat in pairs for 4 overs (regardless of dismissals).
  • The full batting innings lasts 16 overs (4 batting pairs × 4 overs).

Getting Out Doesn’t End Your Innings

  • A batter can be dismissed multiple times during their 4 overs.
  • Every dismissal costs –5 runs, but the pair continues to bat until their 4 overs are complete.

Scoring System

Kind of runs:

  • Physical Runs
  1. Scored when batters cross creases and make their ground.
  2. Can be attempted anytime the ball is live.
  • Bonus Runs Scored when the batter hits the ball into different Zones of the nets. Zone A = 0 runs Zone B = 1 run Zone C = 2 runs Zone D = 4 or 6 runs Zone B or C onto Zone D = 3 runs
  • Penalty Runs 1. No Ball/Wide/Leg side Wide = +2 runs for the batter
  1. Extra zone runs for “No Ball” if a physical run is completed

Bowling & Fielding

  • Each player bowls 2 overs.
  • Bowling must be within the crease and underarm is not allowed.
  • Fielding is active and intense — the ball is always in play due to wall rebounds.

Equipment

  • The ball is a soft leather indoor cricket ball, lighter and less bouncy than a tennis ball.
  • Players wear indoor-specific gloves.

Match Duration

  • A match usually lasts 60–70 minutes, making it efficient and viewer-friendly.

The Arena: Similar Looks, Different Feel

Both games are played in enclosed arenas — walls or nets surrounding the field — but Indoor Cricket is more standardized: proper run-up lanes, official scoring zones, and specific playing dimensions.

Box Cricket is like the street food of cricket. Every turf has its own rules:

  • In some, a shot off the ceiling is out.
  • In others, it’s a six.
  • Some allow LBW, others don’t know the term.

The Culture: Pro League vs. Turf Hustle

Indoor Cricket has:

  • National federations (like IISF in India)
  • Global tournaments (World Cups in Open and Master’s and Junior Categories)
  • Training academies and professional athletes

Box Cricket has:

  • Turf warriors and weekend champions
  • Office rivalries, college battles, influencer leagues
  • Fast-turnaround tournaments, with beer and biryani on the side

At Gully91, we’re working to elevate both — by giving Indoor Cricket the visibility it deserves, and by giving Box Cricket a structure that still lets it breathe.

The Experience: Tactical vs. Explosive

Indoor cricket is deeply tactical — every run counts, and even getting out can’t stop you from scoring. It requires strategic batting, field placements, and serious cardio.

Box cricket is all firepower. You walk in and start swinging. You dive into nets, yell instructions mid-air, and rely on instinct more than discipline. It’s raw, unfiltered fun.

So, Which One is Better?

Wrong question.

The real win is that both formats are bringing cricket to more people — faster, louder, and closer. Whether you’re grinding through an indoor league season or hitting a last-ball six in a turf final, both formats offer something traditional cricket can’t: accessibility and community.

At Gully91, we’re building spaces for both.

We host:

  • Indoor leagues like the Ultimate Indoor Cricket Championship (UIC) — official formats, pro players, national recognition.
  • Box cricket tournaments like the Ultimate Box Cricket Championship — turf-based, short-format thrillers for offices, creators, and communities.

Two games. One goal: To make cricket more inclusive, accessible, and electric.
