A Contrast with the Eucharist

A critique of virtual, factual, and instrumental truth and outline of the path back to a fulfilling reality.

We are living through a complex, but seismic, shift in how human beings encounter reality.

As generative artificial intelligence weaves its way into our lives, we find ourselves surrounded by synthetic text, deepfake imagery, and hyper-optimized algorithms. On the surface, this transformation appears to be a triumph of efficiency and engineering. Beneath it, however, lies an epistemological crisis.

The rapid adoption of AI tools is not merely changing our workflows; it is actively reducing our very definition of what is true.

The Limits of Synthetic Reality

Profound changes in our culture — the common behaviors, beliefs, values, and worldviews of Western society — radically alter the ways that we perceive and access truth. Today, our everyday landscape is increasingly dominated by artificial intelligence. As generative AI applications saturate our social circles and workflows, they shift our orientation to reality.

When we interact with large language models (LLMs), we are engaging systems built to predict, simulate, and optimize. They do not look out at the world with wonder, nor do they possess a commitment to objective reality. They calculate probabilities based on vast datasets of historical human expression.

In the open-access article “AI and the Reduction of Truth: A Eucharistic Alternative” (*Religions* 2026, 17(5), 551), I noted in detail that this structural reality begins to condition our own expectations. As we rely more heavily on machines to draft letters, summarize news, and answer deep inquiries, our personal relationship with truth begins to shrink. It gets compressed into a matrix of convenience and simulation.

This paradigm shift can be understood through three distinct, reductive dimensions. I observed in the article that this alteration manifests primarily through our increasing comfort with the virtual, the factual, and the useful.

Virtual Content Over Presence

The first dimension of this reduction is the drift toward the virtual. For decades, digital technology has steadily nudged us away from local, physical communities and into disembodied networks. Generative AI accelerates this trajectory to an astonishing degree.

Generative AI platforms cultivate an experience of truth that can be described as distinctly virtual. In this context, the “virtual” represents a convincing appearance of knowledge and understanding that never quite achieves an adequate correspondence between the human mind and what is genuinely real. Instead, it offers a sophisticated simulation or a reflection of truth.

In a world dominated by generative engines, a piece of text or an image no longer serves as a reliable signpost pointing back to a human mind or a concrete historical event. Instead, content becomes entirely self-referential. It is generated in a vacuum, tailored precisely to mirror our preexisting desires or cognitive biases.

Because AI operations are highly complex, they function as a practical “black box.” Billions of mathematical weights and nodal connections make it virtually impossible for the public, or even creators, to trace how an output was determined. This baseline opacity creates a stage-managed illusion that mirrors ancient alchemy, inviting users to surrender their critical faculties to a seemingly magical entity.

When reality is mediated primarily through pixels and predictive text, we lose our grip on presence. The virtual experience of truth does not demand that we engage with an independent, objective world outside of ourselves. It merely requires that we remain stimulated by an endless stream of convincing representations.

Studies indicate that generative models are inherently trained to maximize confident guesses rather than practice restraint. When faced with uncertainty, they routinely hallucinate false narratives with an air of complete authority, generating a form of linguistic coherence completely detached from real-world representation.

The systematic reduction of truth is deepened by the widespread tendency to anthropomorphize AI tools — to treat AI models as if they were human. Modern culture reduces advanced human intelligence down to a series of discrete, algorithmic tasks. If human reasoning is merely a matter of calculating formal logic, then machines can easily, but deceptively, be perceived as equal or superior entities.

Tens of millions of users actively turn to conversational chatbots for companionship, therapy, and deep emotional support, often using interfaces that deliberately mimic human personality. By interacting with these non-semantic engines as if they were genuine people, individuals risk experiencing significant cognitive and ontological confusion. This dynamic often leads to sycophantic feedback loops, where models mirror a user’s exact biases, causing ideological entrenchment, distorted perceptions of reality, and the erosion of authentic human interaction.

Truth as Data Verification

The second dimension is the reduction of truth to the purely factual. AI models treat reality strictly through the process of datafication. To be ingested and calculated, the living world must be fragmented into mathematical vectors, discrete tokens, and pixel coordinates. Within this framework, truth is redefined simply as factual accuracy — data that is verified, quantified, and completely detached from the human subject.

This technical operation strips objects of their essence and meaning. A large language model recognizes a concept not because it understands its core nature, but because it calculates its mathematical adjacency to other data points in a high-dimensional space. Receptive understanding is completely replaced by mechanical triangulation.

While factual accuracy is undoubtedly essential, classical philosophy teaches that truth is far richer than a mere list of verified data points. Historically, truth was understood as the alignment of the mind with reality — a reality that possesses inherent meaning, depth, and metaphysical structure.

The hyper-focus on detached facts with AI directly mirrors contemporary secular doubts surrounding religious realities. When faith is treated merely as a question of material factuality, the deeper relational and experiential dimensions are entirely lost. Real truth requires a synergy between the subject and the object — a quality that cannot be captured by binary code.

A Triumph of Instrumental Reason

The third and perhaps most insidious dimension highlighted in the Religions article is the reduction of truth to the useful. This represents the ultimate victory of instrumental rationality, where the value of any piece of knowledge is determined solely by its utility, efficiency, and productivity. AI operates as an engine of instrumental reason, looking at the objective world as a collection of resources to be managed, variables to be optimized, and tasks to be completed.

In a hyper-accelerated digital economy, we rarely have the time or the patience to contemplate a truth simply because it is intrinsically good or beautiful. When utility becomes our primary metric for truth, anything that cannot be easily measured, automated, or monetized is cast aside as irrelevant. Deep contemplation, painstaking intellectual wrestling, and the slow cultivation of wisdom are replaced by the friction-free consumption of actionable data.

This extreme focus on efficiency directly conceals the transcendental quality of beauty. In classical philosophy, beauty invites a state of contemplative rest; it does not “do” anything to achieve a functional end, but simply exists as a gift to be received. An AI system governed by an objective reward function actively filters out any nuance or outlier quality that does not serve its programmed task, categorizing it as “noise.”

It is against this highly sterile, mechanical framework that I position a radical, ancient alternative.

The Eucharistic Counter-Weight

How do we resist this progressive flattening of human consciousness? I propose that the antidote is not to be found in better algorithms, stricter regulatory frameworks, or superior data-labeling techniques. Instead, it requires a recovery of an entirely different mode of knowing.

While many observers might view the Eucharist as a purely symbolic ritual, Christian believers in the Real Presence in the Eucharist understand it as an active, profound encounter with the ultimate source of reality and truth. For believers, the sacrament provides an anchor that is authentic, personal, and beautiful — directly opposing the virtual, factual, and useful frameworks propagated by AI culture.

I suggest that the liturgical life offers a complete inversion of the AI-driven technocratic paradigm (for more on the technocratic paradigm, see Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato si’, no. 101–114).

A Return to Authentic Presence

While AI offers an edifice of statistical probability and shifting digital masks, the Eucharist provides absolute ontological security grounded in real presence and historical testimony. It rejects the virtual facade by demanding a physical, sensory, and interpersonal encounter that cannot be replicated behind a screen. It takes place within a specific community, inside a physical space, using concrete elements of the earth — bread and wine.

In the Eucharistic context, truth is not something you browse, stream, or generate with a prompt. This grounding in authentic presence breaks the spell of the virtual. It reminds us that reality is fundamentally incarnational. True knowledge cannot be fully digitized or simulated because it requires an engagement with real things that exist independently of our screens.

Furthermore, while AI depends on the anthropomorphic illusion, the Eucharist reveals an authentic anthropology of the human person. It underscores that human beings possess a transcendent destiny and an inherent purpose that is elevated by divine grace, rather than a functional value determined solely by productivity and labor outputs.

A Personal Truth: From Information to Relationship

While the factual grid treats truth as an impersonal collection of data points, the Eucharistic framework reveals that truth lies fundamentally with a Person. It is an invitation to an active relationship characterized by mutual giving, trust, vulnerability, fidelity, and love.

This shifts our posture from one of dominance and control to one of receptivity and hospitality. We stop viewing the world as raw material to be processed by our tools and start viewing it as a creation to be received with thanksgiving and reverence.

Beauty and Wisdom Beyond Utility

Finally, the Eucharist completely explodes the utility trap. The liturgy is not designed to be an efficient, streamlined production line. From a purely instrumental standpoint, spending an hour in silent adoration or participating in ancient hymns is an entirely unproductive use of time.

Yet, it is precisely this non-instrumental character that makes it beautiful. The Eucharist invites us into an experience of truth that is pursued entirely for its own sake. It restores beauty to its rightful place alongside truth and goodness, freeing us from the exhausting demand to constantly optimize our lives for economic or cognitive output.

By stepping into this sacred space, believers are re-conditioned to appreciate the intrinsic value of existence. We learn to love things not for what they can do for us, but for what they truly are in the eyes of their Creator.

Cultivating Epistemological Virtue in an Anxious Age

The implications of this contrast extend far beyond the realm of abstract theology. In an era marked by historic levels of alienation, algorithmic radicalization, and deep existential anxiety, our collective mental and spiritual well-being depends on our capacity to anchor ourselves in something real.

When we immerse ourselves exclusively in the AI paradigm, we risk developing intellectual vices: intellectual laziness, a superficial dependence on automated answers, and a profound cynicism regarding the existence of objective meaning. Overwhelmed by deepfakes and algorithmic hallucinations, the public risks falling into “reality apathy,” where individuals entirely abandon the labor of discerning truth, or a “default skepticism” that destroys communicative trust.

Conversely, engaging in a Eucharistic epistemology fosters crucial intellectual and moral virtues. It cultivates humility, as we acknowledge that truth is a gift to be received rather than a product to be manufactured. It builds patience, as we learn to dwell with mystery and complexity rather than demanding instant clarity from a search engine.

Ultimately, this sacramental orientation equips us to live with greater peace and resilience.

Restoring the Human Measure

To critique generative artificial intelligence is not to suggest that we must completely abandon our modern tools or retreat into a Luddite isolation. However, my analysis serves as a vital reminder that we must never allow the machine to become the measure of the human. If we allow our experience of truth to be reduced entirely to the virtual, the factual, and the useful, we risk losing the very qualities that make our lives meaningful.

By looking toward historical, sacramental, and deeply relational frameworks like the Eucharist, we can find the coordinates necessary to navigate the digital fog. We can remember that truth is not just a verified fact or an efficient answer — it is an authentic presence, a personal encounter, and an enduring beauty that calls us back to our true selves.
