“What Is Self-Efficacy?”
===================================
[ About this note ]
A comedy-duo-style read-along where
Yaruko and Tomo-chan learn about
non-cognitive skills at full energy.
✨Yaruko = the funny one
(sharp mind, but her thoughts
head in unique directions)
🎀Tomo-chan = the straight man / explainer
(handles Yaruko’s jokes and
delivers the knowledge)
・ All technical terms are broken down
in plain English.
Cast:
✨Yaruko : 28, office worker.
Catchphrase: “I just kinda
assumed that was how it worked.”
🎀Tomo-chan : Same age. Studies psychology
intensively as a hobby.

“Today is self-efficacy, right?
The moment I heard the term,
I thought — how is this different
from self-esteem?”

“Good question. A lot of people
get these mixed up.
The difference:
Self-esteem
→ “I am OK.”
A sense of acceptance of who
you are as a person.
Self-efficacy
→ “I can do THIS thing.”
A sense of being able to
carry out a specific action.
Proposed by Albert Bandura (1977).
For example:
High self-esteem but
low self-efficacy:
→ “I think I’m a good person.
But there’s no way I can give
that presentation…”
High self-efficacy:
→ “Not really my strength,
but if I prepare,
I think I can pull it off.””

“So then —
since I basically believe
everything will somehow work out,
my self-efficacy must be
sky high!!
Work, dating —
I assume it will all work out.
(It is not, in fact, working out.)”

“Unfounded omnipotence is
something else entirely!!
Self-efficacy is ALWAYS tied to
specific, concrete behaviors!!
The four sources of self-efficacy
(Bandura’s theory):
(1) Mastery Experience
→ Actually doing something
and succeeding at it is
the strongest source.
Stack small wins.
(2) Vicarious Experience
→ Seeing someone similar
to you succeed at it.
→ “If they can do it,
maybe I can too.”
(3) Verbal Persuasion
→ A trusted person telling you,
“You can do this.”
(4) Physiological / Emotional State
→ Manage your bodily state.
Reframe nervousness as
“evidence of motivation.”
(Cognitive reappraisal.)”

“So vicarious experience means…
If I watch you studying so hard,
and I think, “if she can do it,
maybe I can pick up these
non-cognitive skills too” —
that counts, right?
Which means……
Tomo-chan, you are currently
the source of MY self-efficacy.
Thank you for your service.
Please continue.”

“Your usage of the concept
is technically correct!!
But somehow I feel like
I just got hustled!!
Recap:
(1) Self-efficacy = belief in your
ability to do a specific thing
(2) Different from self-esteem
(“I am OK as a person”)
(3) Four sources — mastery
experience is the strongest
(4) Stacking small wins is the
most effective path”

[ Quiz ]
==================================
Q. According to Bandura’s theory,
the most powerful source of
self-efficacy is:
(A) Inspirational messages from
celebrities.
(B) Your own accumulated
successes.
← Correct
© Reading biographies of
successful people.
(D) Repeating positive
affirmations every day.
[ Explanation ]
Among the four sources, Bandura
identified mastery experience —
your own real, lived successes at
a task — as the most powerful.
Building this through small,
achievable steps is the most
effective way to grow it.
