Why females live longer than males

Female mammals usually live longer than males, and the reason is not just one thing. It is a mix of behavior, hormones, chromosomes, reproduction, and evolutionary pressure.

Let’s start with the obvious part. In many species, males take more risks. They fight more often, compete for mates, move through more dangerous situations, and in humans they have historically done more dangerous jobs, died more often in wars, and delayed medical care out of pride or habit. This is not just a cultural detail: in many animals, a winner-takes-all mating strategy rewards risky behavior, because one successful male can leave many offspring. If that strategy works reproductively, the tendency behind it can keep being passed on.

Testosterone is part of the same story. High testosterone is linked to competition, aggression, mating effort, and risk-taking, but it can also come with costs. It may weaken some immune responses and, over a whole lifetime, that can matter. Estrogen, on the other hand, tends to support stronger immune responses in females. So the male body often pays for traits that are useful in mating competition but costly for long-term survival.

There is also the chromosome problem. In mammals, females usually have two X chromosomes, while males have one X and one Y. That matters because the second X can act as a kind of genetic backup. If a harmful mutation affects one X chromosome, the other may partly compensate. Males do not have the same protection for many X-linked genes. A study in mice found that XX chromosomes increased survival during aging even when researchers separated the effect of chromosomes from the effect of gonads, suggesting that the chromosome difference itself plays a role in lifespan.

Mitochondria may add another small disadvantage for males. They are the energy-producing structures inside our cells, and they have their own DNA. Since mitochondrial DNA is inherited from mothers, natural selection acts on it mainly through female bodies. In simple terms, mitochondria are passed through both sons and daughters, but they only continue into the next generation through daughters. That means mutations that are harmless or beneficial for females but less ideal for males may be less efficiently removed.

Then there is reproduction itself. Across many mammals, females invest more in offspring: pregnancy, nursing, care, protection, and often long periods of dependence. In species where the young need a lot of help, keeping females alive can be strongly favored by natural selection. Humans are an extreme case because childhood is unusually long, and older women can help daughters and grandchildren survive. Orcas show something similar: older females can play an important role in family survival after they stop reproducing, which supports the “grandmother” idea.

Large comparative studies support the broader pattern. In one study of 1,176 mammal and bird species in zoos, 72% of female mammals lived longer than males, while in birds the pattern often reversed, with 68% of males living longer. That reversal is interesting because birds have the opposite sex-chromosome system: males are ZZ and females are ZW. This fits the idea that the sex with two different sex chromosomes is often more vulnerable.

The same study also found that lifespan differences were stronger in species with intense mating competition and smaller in species with longer-lasting monogamous pairs. That makes sense: if males spend less energy fighting, displaying, wandering, or competing violently, the survival gap tends to shrink. In zoos, where predation, hunger, and many environmental dangers are reduced, the gap is usually smaller than in the wild, but it does not disappear completely.

So the answer is not simply “males are reckless” or “females have better genes.” Both are partly true, but incomplete. Female mammals tend to live longer because their bodies often have chromosomal advantages, hormonal advantages, and evolutionary reasons to stay alive longer for reproduction and care. Males, meanwhile, often pay biological and behavioral costs for mating competition.

It is not a moral story.

It is biology doing trade-offs.
