Mindset
“The more confident you are in your defense, the more confident you will be in attacking your opponent, knowing that if you end up in a bad position, you can easily recover and go right back into more attacks.” — Gordan Ryan

The ability to finish a fight is what differentiates the elite in all martial arts. Offense and going for finishes puts you at risk. This is why an amazing defense allows your submissions and chokes to be that much better. If you are confident you can survive and escape from mount, side-control, leg locks and back control then you can attack your opponent with no fear.
Less fear of bad positions = more submission attempts.
More submission attempts = more submissions.
Technique
Escape Mount Position
Nothing in jiu-jitsu feels worse than being mounted. You can’t breathe right, and panic says bench press them off. Don’t. Mount is escaped with frames and hips, not arms. Here’s the order to learn it in.
- Bridge & Roll. Trap one of your opponents arm across your chest. Then you bridge and roll that direction because they have nowhere to post. This likely wont work on higher level guys but it is a good white/blue belt move.
- Hip Post or Elbow post. The way you determine which post you use, depends on the opponents knee. If their knee is low then you use a hip post. If their knee is high closer to your chest then you use an elbow post.
- Elbow-Knee Escape + Kipp Every clean mount escape comes back to one rule: keep your elbow inside, and never try to push the mount off with two flat hands. Elbow tucked inside, framing on their hip. Shift/Kipp your hips away, then thread your knee and elbow together into half or butterfly guard.
- Stop hugging them. Wrapping your arms around your opponent’s back from bottom mount does nothing and never has. Arms busy hugging are arms that aren’t framing, and framing is the only thing getting you out.
Drill the bridge and roll until it’s boring, then add the elbow escape. Get those two clean and mount stops being the position you dread.
