The modern Western diet is filled with highly processed, convenient, and highly palatable foods that constantly expose people to external eating cues. Researchers suggest these “obesogenic environments” may override the body’s natural hunger and fullness signals, increasing the risk of overeating and weight gain.
Recent research in nutritional psychology is exploring how these dietary patterns affect interoception, the brain’s ability to sense and interpret internal bodily signals such as hunger, satiety, heartbeat, breathing, and emotional states. Interoception is considered one of the six foundational elements of nutritional psychology and plays an important role in appetite regulation, emotional balance, and overall health.
What Is Interoception?
Interoception refers to the body’s internal awareness system. It helps individuals recognize signals such as:
- Hunger and fullness
- Food cravings
- Fatigue caused by lack of food
- Emotional responses related to eating
- Physical sensations like heartbeat and breathing
Research in neuroscience has shown that stronger interoceptive awareness is linked to better emotional regulation and healthier eating behaviors.
How the Western Diet Affects Appetite Regulation
Healthy appetite control depends on the brain’s ability to balance external food cues with internal satiety signals. Normally, interoceptive signals help prevent overeating by informing the brain when the body has had enough food.
However, researchers believe Western diets may weaken this internal regulation system.
In a 2016 study, researchers examined how a Western diet (WD), rich in processed and low-nutrient foods, affected appetite regulation in rodents. The animals were trained to respond to both internal hunger cues and external food-related cues before being divided into two groups:
- A regular chow diet group
- A Western diet group
After external food cues were removed, rodents consuming the Western diet struggled to distinguish between internal hunger signals and external food cues. In contrast, rodents fed a regular diet maintained normal responses to internal satiety signals.
The Role of the Hippocampus
The study linked these effects to the hippocampus, a brain region involved in processing interoceptive satiety signals and regulating feeding behavior.
Researchers found that impairing the hippocampus caused rodents to:
- Gain more weight
- Become less sensitive to satiety hormones
- Show reduced response to cholecystokinin, a hormone that signals fullness and slows digestion
These findings suggest that Western diets may impair the hippocampus’ ability to process internal energy-state signals, increasing the likelihood of overeating.
Human Research Supports the Findings
More recent human research further supports the connection between interoception and body weight.
In a 2022 study involving more than 1,000 adults, researchers found that poorer interoceptive accuracy, or reduced ability to recognize internal bodily signals, predicted higher body mass index (BMI).
The findings suggest that weakened awareness of hunger and fullness cues may contribute to unhealthy eating patterns and obesity risk.
Why This Matters for Nutritional Psychology
The relationship between diet and mental health extends beyond nutrients alone. Western dietary patterns may interfere with the body’s natural communication system for regulating appetite and emotional balance.
Understanding interoception may help researchers and clinicians develop new approaches to improving eating behaviors, weight management, and mental well-being. Choosing nutrient-dense foods and reducing reliance on highly processed foods may support healthier appetite regulation and overall health.
