The UX Problem Hiding in Plain Sight — Empty States

Yesterday, I was exploring different apps for a university project when I hit a wall:

A blank “Bookmarks” page with just “No items found.”

No guidance. No suggestions. Just… nothing.

This made me realize something important:

We spend hours perfecting our main features but completely ignore empty states — the first thing new users often see.

The problem is everywhere:

  • “No results found” with zero help
  • Blank dashboards that feel broken
  • Empty carts with no shopping suggestions
  • Wishlists that say “Start adding items” but don’t show HOW

Here’s what good empty states do: ✅ Show users what’s possible with sample content ✅ Provide clear next steps ✅ Use friendly visuals instead of just text ✅ Turn confusion into excitement

Example transformation: ❌ “No playlists found” ✅ “Create your first playlist! Start with your favorite song and we’ll suggest similar tracks”

The insight: Empty states aren’t empty space — they’re your biggest opportunity to guide users toward their first success.

As a Python developer learning UX, this opened my eyes to how backend logic affects frontend emotions.

What’s the most frustrating empty state you’ve encountered?
