NACCA BHM 2026

Dear Sister Jerisha, Brother Michael Bowe, and the NACCA Board, On behalf of the York Region Alliance of African Canadian Communities (YRAACC), I would like to extend my deepest gratitude for the invitation to your truly uplifting and inspiring Black History Month celebration. The theme, “The Promise We Carry,” was a profound testament to the resilience and enduring contributions of Black Canadians.

The event was masterfully curated. Sandra Whiting, as MC, brought incredible warmth and insightful cultural context to the stage. The powerful drumming from the Ngoma Ensemble set a majestic tone for the evening, while Paul Osbourne’s libation served as a grounding reminder of our ancestral roots and the elements that sustain us. It was moving to hear Jayla Hall’s beautiful renditions of the National and Black Anthems, and the stirring spoken-word performance by Randell Adjei.

It was encouraging to hear from all levels of government. We appreciated the greetings from MP Sandra Cobena and the insights from MPP Dawn Gallagher-Murphy. We share your anticipation for the launch of the Black curriculum in schools this September — a vital step for our community’s future. Mayor John Taylor’s passionate remarks regarding equity and the treatment of the Obamas resonated deeply, as did Deputy Chief Kevin McCloskey’s commitment, who reaffirmed that York Regional Police’s dedication to inclusion is a year-round priority.

Seeing the youth take such a prominent role was a highlight for me. From Mustafa Datoo’s respectful Land and Ancestral Acknowledgements to the original musical talents of Julie Melanin and the vibrant energy of Kuumba Arts Expression, the future of our leadership is bright.

Our keynote speaker, Sean Mauricette, provided a masterclass in the Afro-Caribbean diaspora, reminding us of the importance of an inclusive and accurate historical record. His call to carry forward the legacy of past generations while building an equitable future is a mission that YRAACC firmly stands behind.

Ending the celebration with the drumming and dance of Afiwi Groove School was the perfect finale to an extraordinary event. Thank you for your leadership and for your tireless work in empowering Black youth and supporting our community.
