About Goals and How They Move About

This is about refocusing, regeneration, and rebirth. At least, that’s where I stand at the moment with my writing.

Like a physician, I would say, “Do no harm.” So, I don’t intend to steer you off into the hinterlands without an explanation. Actually, I don’t think there are bad directions. I think there are certainly directions you can learn at least something. But, still, you’ve got the last say-so as to where you’re going to head next.

I have set expectations for myself in my writing. One is that I teach something. Another is that I write at least 2,000 words a day. Another is that I strive for a 70,000-word count at the end of any month. It used to be 50,000 words, but I upped my count when I began to go over 50,000 words on a more or less regular basis. My goals are always changing. And that’s okay. It doesn’t mean I’m not focused. It means I push myself.

So, when things get to be routine, I’ve always felt a need to stir things up with a stick. I’m not talking about your routines. I’m talking about my own.

My writing has always been about self-discovery. You can get there through your own pain or somebody else’s. Does it have to be pain? That’s about the only thing that works for me. If you’ve got a different outlook or system, please share in the comments. However, I’ve also heard an old adage about a donkey and a carrot.

There was a time when I whined a lot in my writing. I don’t know about anybody else, but it was the beginning of my healing. I also want to apologize to all the people in my life who listened to my whining. I know it was asking a lot, but you did it because you cared about me. You are gone now from the physical part, but I still appreciate what you did, and I still think about you.

Does it count when you thank people who have died? I think it does. In any case, they know you’re thinking about them. This thing with regrets. Over the years, I have come to learn that having regrets is not all that helpful. Unless, of course, you want to change your ways because you are still doing the regrettable activity. It’s like spilled milk. You clean it up. You move on. Bringing up the incident 15 years later isn’t helpful. Unless you are still spilling milk.

I heard something interesting from a friend who took a class geared toward senior citizens. I wasn’t sure why she took it, because at the time, we had to have been in our 40s. Anyway, she said, when seniors are walking, it is better not to look at the ground. She said looking where you want to go is better for your balance. However, I have tripped on uneven sidewalks in the past and have not yet decided whether to follow this advice. However, I think it’s great advice for the things you like to do, like writing. Having a goal in mind has been a happy thing for me. I don’t always have one other than I want to write an article.

Also, several years ago, I thought I should write articles geared toward the audiences who read and also what they wanted. The problem is, I really don’t know what you want, and I tend to follow a universal principle: if you need to read what I write, you will show up. So, I write about the things I am focused on, of productivity, spiritual peace, playing, and now, since I’m old, being old.

You might include the part of Spirit that you talk to.

Oh, everybody, this is my Spirit Guide, Seth. At least, that’s who I’m assuming this is.

You are correct. Also, please remember the adage about assuming.

That’s where you say when you assume something, you are making an ass out of you and me.

If I might?

Please.

And, so, a short word this morning about goals. It is expected that you will change your goals as you age. First off, you will no longer be able to leap tall buildings in a single bound. It is not something to lament. It is just what happens, and until and if the human race ever succeeds in living to the ripe old age of 250 years, you’ll just need to live with the idea that the older you get, the less time you will have. There was a time when 35 years might be all you could expect from life, but that has changed.

It is important for you to keep moving. When you stand still long enough, your roots will take hold, and you likely won’t be able to move as far or as quickly as you used to be able to.

The first thing to remember as you are older is that the way you exercise will be different. Do half push-ups or kitchen-counter push-ups. Bend yourself some. Roll your head slowly. No jerking movements. Gentle is good. Every so often, take two or three minutes to do something so that you become aware again of your wrists and your thumbs and fingers. Move, shake gently, rotate.

That is the opportunity to breathe deeply, to hold your breath a bit, and to exhale on a whoosh.

Our blessings.

Hey, thanks. That was helpful.
