Wait! I am Married?

When I hear newly married people talk about how they mistakenly went back home after getting married, I just cannot relate or I know it is unlikely to happen to me. It’s because my brain had been preparing for that move long before it happened. It’s the same way I never experienced the shyness of getting dressed in front of your husband for the first time. I mean, you were not kidnapped into marriage now, were you? You have had years to process and accept that that would one day be your reality. If we are being honest, after all the temptations you weathered, you have been looking forward to this day and being able to do that. This is why I have a sneaking suspicion that most people do this whole shyness thing just to appear chaste…..maybe I am the problem and I just need Jesus more. Of course, this might be different for people who had short courtship periods and probably long distance. I also know the human mind is weird and despite all these, some people will still struggle but I am not one of those ‘some people’.
My brag and accusations apart, I will confess that I am not without my own imperfections (shocking right?). As we countdown to celebrating 5 years, I will share my own ultimate “Wait, I am Married?” moment.
It was a fateful night just weeks after our wedding and I was in bed sleeping and dressed as a newly married woman dresses, when my husband walked into the room. I startled awake and my first action was to sit up and cover myself with the duvet to protect myself from the intruder. I must have given him a deer in the headlights look because he just stood still looking at me.
My husband: (confused) Hi
Me: Hello
Husband: Is everything alright?
Me: Yes. Can you excuse me?
Husband: Okay. (Gentleman that he is, started heading out of the room but stops halfway) Why though?
Me: Because I am not well dressed.
Husband: We are married! I have seen you naked!
Me: (more shocked and mentally thinking “what? seen me naked ke! who is this?”)
It took about 30 seconds for my brain to finally do its job and I remembered that I had married this man a few weeks before.
What is more? I wish I could tell you it was a one time thing. We have had different versions of this even till this year. I still startle awake, look at him suspiciously or ask “who is this?” before I drift back to sleep. To be fair, why is he coming to bed late too anyway?
I know at this point you may feel tempted to ask “so after all the brag, were you really ready for marriage?”, Don’t!
Cheers to celebrating 5 years with the absolute best!
